Landscape Architecture, BA Hons
Our accredited landscape architecture degree provides the professional skills to design the future spaces around us. Improve and refine our daily lives via the creation of sustainable public places.
Teaching takes place in our state-of-the-art Stockwell Street Building, which is home to the School of Design. Here you will be working in our extensive design studios whilst also interacting with other design and creative disciplines. This amazing building contains a large interior living wall and many green roofs, which are used for teaching and research projects.
You'll study a range of approaches to landscape design, from public spaces and waterfronts to town planning, urban development and regional strategies. As well as design studio work, you'll learn about the history and theory of landscapes, ecology, conservation, and digital communication. Our Landscape Architecture programmes encourage innovation and experimentation alongside practical approaches, allowing students the freedom to develop cutting-edge and workable design solutions to some of today’s environmental and social challenges. Your course portfolio will support employment opportunities in leading landscape architecture practices in the UK and around the world.
Our landscape architecture degree is the only course of its kind in London and is accredited by the Landscape Institute. Completion enables our students to start on their ‘Pathway to Chartership’ as Associate members of the Landscape Institute.

How you will learn
Teaching
Learning takes place through a combination of timetabled learning and independent study.
You can view more information about how each module is taught within our 'What you will study' section.
Seminars and workshops enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. You will also be able to meet your personal tutor. Timetabled learning may fall between 9am and 9pm depending on your courses and tutorials.
Class sizes
The typical student intake per year averages between 10-25. The small class-sizes ensure a highly supportive environment for learning through 1-to-1 tutorials and group presentations.
Independent learning
Outside of the timetabled sessions, you are also expected to dedicate around 20 hours per week to self-study. Our Stockwell Street Library and online resources will support your further reading and research.
You can also participate in the following:
- Additional support classes in some modules
- Guest lectures from industry experts
- Employability and enterprise workshops
- Student societies.
Overall workload
If you are studying full-time, you should expect the workload to be similar to a full-time job. Each module you study towards this degree is worth 15 or 30-credits. These represent around 150 or 300 study hours respectively. If you receive 100 contact hours for a 30-credit module, you should expect to commit 200 hours to independent study to complete it successfully.
The main focus of the teaching is on design projects, where you visit a landscape site and develop, through 1-to-1 tutorials and presentations, a design proposal. As well as drawings and models for the project, you will create technical reports that include material and planting specifications, and prepare history and theory essays.
Assessment
You can view how each module is assessed within our 'What you will study' section.
Each course has formal assessments which count towards your grade. Some courses may also include 'practice' assignments, which help you monitor progress and do not count towards your final grade.
Feedback summary
We aim to give feedback on assignments within 15 working days.

What sort of careers do graduates pursue?
Opportunities are available in Landscape Architecture, Landscape Planning and Urban Design. Recent graduates have gained employment in the public and private sectors in the UK and worldwide.
