Modules

The sections below will guide you through the stages of module proposal and development, the Faculty Student Success Committee (FSSC) is currently responsible for the approval of all individual new modules, module modification and discontinuations. Please contact your faculty for a list of committee dates and take note of the deadlines in this section.

Note for the 24/25 session: As this academic session welcomes a new modification process, which came into effect in October, there will be a transitional period so any ‘old format’ forms completed prior to the new process being implemented will still be accepted and considered for approval. This transitional period will last until 1st January 2025 when it is expected that all proposals will be received using the new format.

Develop a New Module

New modules are introduced as part of programme curriculum development and are normally required for the following reasons:

  • New content/pedagogy
  • Change of Title
  • Change of Level
  • Change of Credit value

If you are developing a new programme, you will need to provide a New Module Specification for each new module being proposed using the templates below

To propose a new module for delivery on an existing programme, a New Module Specification will need to be submitted as part of the Programme Modification Form linked below. This will then be taken through the Faculty Student Success Committee (FSSC)(or sub-group) and once approved, the new module will be included as part of the respective programme’s structure(s). If you need advice about the process for developing a new module you can contact your quality team:

Advice about module content and design can also be sought from professional bodies, an appropriate external advisor such as a professional in the field, a discipline specialist or an External Examiner. Proposals for new modules required to take effect in the following academic year of a programme must have been taken through the committee approval process by the beginning of December of the current academic year. If your new module will not run until a later session, you can submit a proposal for a new module at any point up until the same December deadline relevant for that respective session.

Your faculty will publish committee dates annually so that you can plan curriculum modifications in line with these dates.

All programmes and modules are subject to Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) stipulations for informing and consulting with stakeholders before a change is made. Please consult CMA guidance and timescales to understand the requirements for student and staff consultation. You can find the documents here.

Change a Module

Modules should be reviewed on an annual basis following student evaluation and performance outcomes, and through External Examiner/PSRB reporting.  From this reflection you may wish to make modifications to your modules in order to improve student experience, outcomes or to ensure it remains current and relevant for programme objectives and sector developments.

Changes that can be made through the modification process are normally changes made to:

  • Aims
  • Learning Outcomes
  • Summative Assessment
  • Scheduled Teaching Hours and KIS Data
  • Pre-Requisites
  • Host School (internal faculty)

These changes can be requested using the module change form linked below.

Some module modifications have to be requested using the Programme Modification Form due to the need for a new module code. A new module specification will be required in addition to a programme structure update to reflect the changes in the module and programme:

  • Change of title
  • Change of level
  • Change of credit
  • Change of Host School (external to faculty)

A module change may be submitted throughout the academic year until the beginning of May of the session previous to the change taking effect. As with all curriculum proposals, these will be required to be approve by the FSSC so they can be distributed to the relevant professional services to implement: Curriculum Records Office (CRO) for Banner records, Planning and Statistics (PAS) Directorate which will add the relevant data from Banner to the University Key Information Sets (KIS) and Timetabling.

If you require a change to be made to your module outside of these timeframes then please contact your Quality Office for guidance and information:

Discontinue or Suspend a Module

As part of programme development it may be necessary to discontinue a module(s). As discontinuation will, normally, impact the programme structure, this needs to be done via the Programme Modification Form, and a thorough review of programme modules will need to be undertaken to ensure the structure is balanced and that stage credit meets the requirements of the FHEQ, details of these can be found in Section B ‘The Academic Framework’ of our Academic Regulations for Taught Awards:

Before completing discontinuation you should consider the wider impact of discontinuing a module, for example, it may affect a number of different programmes within or beyond the faculty (e.g. at a partner organisation).

Replacing a discontinued module

If you need to replace a discontinued module with a new module, this can be done using the same Programme Modification Form. You will need to submit a New Module Specification, as well as an updated Programme Specification in order to do so.

Timescales and deadlines

A module discontinuation may be submitted, for consideration and approval by the Faculty Student Success Committee, prior to the beginning of December for implementation the following academic year.

Module Monitoring / Submit an Annual Module Report

After each occurrence of a module, a short Module Monitoring Report must be written to ensure that staff, student and External Examiner feedback is addressed.

Module Monitoring Reports are used to inform Annual Programme Review reports, as well as forming part of the Subject Assessment Panel (SAP) process. Student module evaluations take place through the online EvaSys system, with actions reported back to students.

The Module Monitoring Report uses the online 'greweb' system and is available on the 'Staff Portal' in the Learning Support tab under 'Academic Resources' where you select the 'Annual Monitoring Reports' link. It should be completed and submitted to the Head of Department and departmental committee.

Timescales and deadlines

A Module Monitoring Report should be completed shortly after the end of the module, and in time to be presented at the relevant SAP.

The Module Monitoring Report system will go live every academic year from the 01st November, this will allow colleagues that have cross-sessional end modules that they complete early in Term 1 to complete their report.
