Nursing (Children's Nursing), MSc

If you're a graduate looking for a rewarding career as a registered children’s nurse, our innovative Master's in Nursing will help you achieve your goals.

Becoming a children's nurse requires a unique blend of sensitivity and skill. This MSc course offers clinical placements and a varied and engaging glimpse into the many possibilities for future careers.

Lessons on-campus take place in simulated wards in addition to lecture theatres and are taught by a first-class team of highly skilled, expert lecturers. Your clinical placements provide an opportunity to put your theoretical learning into practice, working alongside highly skilled and experienced children's nurses at the cutting edge of patient care.

You will experience the work of specialist services - from community nursing teams and children's emergency departments to on-going care services for children with long term and complex needs, including end-of-life care.

All nursing students on courses from September 2020 will benefit from guaranteed, additional support of at least £5,000 a year, which they will not need to pay back. See more information.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have:

  • An honours degree; normally a  2.1 in any subject
  • A minimum of three GCSEs, including English language and mathematics at grade C or above, or equivalent
  • Plus experience of working/volunteering in a health/social care setting for at least 450 hours within the past five years. Applicants will be required to provide evidence to verify their practice hours.

In line with NMC requirements, students without English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an IELTS examination results (academic or general), where the scores are at least 7.0 in the listening and reading sections and at least 7.0 in the writing and speaking sections, and where the overall average score is at least 7.0.

Students who require a visa to study in the UK are not eligible to apply for this programme.

COVID vaccine
An important part of many of our Health programmes is the opportunity to learn on placement and work with patients, service users and their families.  On all our programmes leading to a professional accreditation with either the NMC or HCPC, placement in a health or social care setting is a compulsory learning outcome of the programme.

Prior to commencing on your chosen programme of study we strongly urge you to complete a full course of Covid-19 vaccinations. Although not currently compulsory, both the NMC and HCPC strongly encourage all registrants to be fully vaccinated. This is because There is a global scientific consensus, supported by our own medicines regulator in the UK, on the importance and value of full vaccination against Covid-19 and the benefits for people receiving care, vaccinated individuals themselves, their families, communities and the wider health and social care system.

While currently you can register with the NMC and HCPC as a non-vaccinated individual, their expectations and regulatory advice is clear, please see here for NMC position on Covid-19 vaccination and here for the HCPC’s position.

Can I use Prior Learning?

Entry requirements for all the MSc pre-reg nursing programmes include completion of a portfolio of evidence prior to joining, which allows direct entry into the second year of our pre-reg cycle, and allows the NMC required hours of study and hours of practice from Year 1 to RPL. There is no RPL for any course to be completed while on the programme.

Enhanced disclosure

Applicants for this course are required to complete a suitability declaration, an enhanced disclosure and barring service (DBS) check, and an occupational health check.

How you will learn

Teaching

Teaching is delivered by a range of lectures, seminars and tutorials, involving group-based learning and one-to-one support, using the latest range of teaching methods and technology to support student learning. In a typical week, learning takes place through a combination of lectures and seminars. You will be able to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller group sessions.

Independent learning

The MSc involves a considerable amount of independent study.

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of contact hours (lectures, seminars, etc), independent learning, and assessments. There will be a full-time placement each semester.

Assessment

On this course, you will be assessed by essays, Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), reports, exams, and a practice assessment document.

Will I have a work placement?

We provide exceptional opportunities with clinical placements across the Children's Nursing spectrum. You will have the chance to be placed within renowned local NHS Trusts throughout London and the South East.

These placements will provide you with a vital opportunity to put your theoretical learning into practice, working alongside highly skilled and experienced Children's Nurses. These are practitioners at the cutting-edge of patient care delivering excellent services in acute and primary care settings. Your placements will also provide you with opportunities to satisfy the requirements of the EU Directives.

During your training, you will experience the work of specialist services, for example, in community Children's Nursing teams and children's emergency departments. This is in addition to on-going care services for children with long term and complex needs, including end of life care.

How long is my placement?

Placements last from 10-14 weeks, depending on terms.

What sort of careers do graduates pursue?

Successful completion of the course brings first level registration as a qualified nurse. Children's Nursing graduates will be well-placed for swift promotion to senior and leading roles in nursing and healthcare sectors. These include posts such as advanced practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse consultants, nurse teaching, research and senior managerial and operational posts.

Our services are designed to help you achieve your potential and support your transition towards a rewarding graduate career.

The Employability and Careers Service provides support when you are preparing to apply for placements and graduate roles. It includes CV clinics, mock interviews and employability skills workshops.

Each School also has its own Employability Officer, who works closely with the industry and will provide specific opportunities relevant to your own course.

We want you to make the most of your time with us. You can access study skills support through your tutor, our subject librarians, and our online academic skills centre.

Where appropriate, we provide support in academic English and mathematics. If you need to use particular IT packages for a specific module, we provide training for this.

We want to make the experience for our health and social care students as simple as possible, keeping costs to a minimum and ensuring our students get the best experience.
