Global attitudes to public health have never been more significant. Migration, inequality, and the global economy have changed how we think about health and illness. As a result, tackling public health issues now needs to be viewed on a global scale. This course offers you a rich and varied environment to explore the complex public health issues relevant to a global audience. Anyone with an undergraduate degree and/or relevant work experience is encouraged to apply.

About the course team

Welcome to our MSc in Global Public Health. Your teaching comes from an experienced team of lecturers. These include academics and practitioners with a wide range of experience. 100 per cent of our teaching team holds a teaching qualification. They bring a wealth of professional, cultural and personal experiences to the teaching environment and have taught in institutes around the world. Our research profile is equally international and is used to enrich teaching and learning on this course.

How you will learn

Teaching

Some lectures are delivered online, which allows you to study flexibly and arrange your studies around your other commitments. It also requires a lot of discipline and you will need to dedicate enough time for self-study.

You learn online using a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). This allows you to access electronic study resources and forums to discuss course material and work collaboratively with others. You also have access to online resources via our library.

Independent learning

Outside of timetabled sessions, you will need to dedicate time to self-study to prepare for coursework, presentations and exams. Our library and online resources will support your further reading and research. You can also join a range of student societies.

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of contact hours (lectures, seminars, etc), independent learning, and assessments. For full-time students, the workload should be roughly equivalent to a full-time job. For part-time students, this will reduce in proportion with the number of modules you are studying.

Assessment

On this course, students are assessed via a range of employment-related activities. These may include academic posters, oral presentations, reports, work based projects, small scale research, essay and exams. Some modules may also include 'practice' assessments, which help you to make continual improvement.

University accommodation is available from £126.35 per person per week (bills included), depending on your location and preferences. If you require more space or facilities, these options are available at a slightly higher cost.

  • Resources: you may need to purchase books for your studies, as well as specific computer software (estimate, £150 per year)

Careers and placements

What sort of careers do graduates pursue?

As a Global Public Health graduate, you will be able to explore careers in international and national non-governmental organisations and charities that work around the globe.

It can lead to roles such as Community Development, Health Promoter, Epidemiologist, Policy Officer, International Programme Consultant or Global Programme Manager.

The course can help you pursue careers in government departments both in and outside the UK. It can lead to senior roles in public health such as Public Health Specialist, Public Health Researcher, Analyst or Strategist, Health Policy Researcher, Service Manager or Director.

Do you provide employability services?

Our services are designed to help you achieve your potential and support your transition towards a rewarding graduate career.

The Employability and Careers Service provides support when you are preparing to apply for placements and graduate roles. It includes CV clinics, mock interviews and employability skills workshops.

Each School also has its own Employability Officer, who works closely with the industry and will provide specific opportunities relevant to your own course.

Academic skills and study support

We want you to make the most of your time with us. You can access study skills support through your tutor, our subject librarians, and our online academic skills centre.

Where appropriate, we provide support in academic English and mathematics. If you need to use particular IT packages for a specific module, we provide training for this.

Support from the department

As a student in the School of Human Science, we help you develop your career goals and your personal profile through the dissemination of your work. This can be through conference presentations, professional posters, publication, and, if appropriate, bids for funding.

You can also join societies and take part in university life, such as becoming a Student Representative. Our students have repeatedly won awards for their leadership and contribution to the university.
