Gary Mountford

Technical Director, EPR Architects

The friendships, experiences, and foundation of my architectural career all began there. Today, as I continue to shape skylines and mentor future architects, the influence of those formative years at Thames Polytechnic is something I carry with me.

Gary Mountford is the Technical Director at EPR Architects. If you walk through London, you will likely encounter Gary’s work, from the Ritz to the Southbank.

"Architecture has allowed me to leave a tangible mark on cities like London. As my wife said while walking along the South Bank, 'You've left some of your DNA here."

Gary's journey to becoming an architect began long before he enrolled at Thames Polytechnic. From an early age, drawing came naturally to him. "I wasn't the most academic, especially when it came to exams," Gary reflects, "but I was always drawing, always creating." His creative spirit, partly influenced by undiagnosed dyslexia, paved the way for his future career.

Gary's school years were marked by challenges, particularly at a small grammar school with limited options. "When it came to choosing subjects for O-levels, I had to give up art. But I continued with technical drawing, which I loved. It kept me connected to that world of design." After leaving school at 16, he chose an apprenticeship that placed him in a drawing office. "I loved that environment. It was the foundation for what would eventually become my career."

Gary's late diagnosis of dyslexia didn't change his approach to work but helped him understand his past struggles. "Dyslexia has not held me back in the creative field of architecture. I see it as a strength rather than a limitation. My advice to neurodiverse students is to embrace your uniqueness. Your brain processes things differently, and that can be your greatest asset."

Gary's decision to study at Thames Polytechnic was driven by a desire to explore London's vibrant architectural landscape while finding a 'home away from home'. "The studio spaces were amazing, and the campus had a wonderful vibe. It was close enough to London to take advantage of the city's architecture and future employment opportunities."

Starting in 1982 as the first in his family to attend university, Gary quickly found himself immersed in a diverse community. "University brings together such a rich mix of people. It was eye-opening, and I formed lifelong friendships."

Gary describes his career as a gift. "Architecture has enriched my life beyond what I could have imagined. Growing up with undiagnosed dyslexia and facing academic challenges, I was initially steered away from higher education. Thames Polytechnic saw potential in me and set me on the path to becoming an architect."

Gary has worked on many notable projects, including the conversion of a Victorian school into The LaLiT London hotel and the transformation of Bow Street Magistrates' Court into a luxury hotel. "One of my most complex projects is the current restoration of The Ritz. The level of detail and quality we strive for on this project is extraordinary. As I mentor younger architects on the team, I emphasise the importance of not compromising on that last 5% of quality."

Gary Mountford's career is a testament to the power of following one's passion. As an accomplished architect and mentor, he continues to inspire and guide the next generation. His story underscores the transformative impact of Thames Polytechnic, which set him on a path to a fulfilling career and a lasting legacy in architecture.
