Dr Emma Charlene Lubaale

Senior Lecturer in Law

Emma Charlene Lubaale obtained her LLD and LLM degrees from the University of Pretoria in South Africa and her LLB degree from Makerere University in Uganda. She holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice and a teaching qualification – a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education. Emma joined the University of Greenwich in 2023. Prior to this, she worked as a senior academic at the Faculty of Law at Rhodes University in South Africa. Emma has previously held positions as Senior Lecturer and Researcher at the University of Venda and the University of Pretoria in South Africa and various universities in Uganda.

Emma pays attention to students’ learning experiences. In 2018, while based at the University of Venda, she received the Vice Chancellor’s overall excellence award in teaching and learning. Emma continues to leverage her previous experience as an academic/student across continents/universities to enrich students’ learning experiences.

Emma’s teaching is research-informed. Her research interests are in criminal justice, legal theory, gender studies, decolonial approaches, women and children’s rights. Her most recent publications have dealt with the interface between legal theory, women’s rights and criminal justice. Emma has over 50 publications in these and related areas and has attended national and international conferences focused on these fields. At the most recent international conference she attended on Gender and Women’s studies in Bangkok, Thailand, in July 2023, she received an award for best oral presenter in the category of Violence Against Women. Among her recent book publications are three edited volumes published by Springer in 2021 and 2022 where she served as a lead editor. She has supervised over 15 post-graduate students to completion and served as an external examiner for over 20 post-graduate (PhDs and LLMs) dissertations. She has severally served as a reviewer for publishers including Springer and Routledge and sat on grant panels by the National Research Foundation of South Africa. Emma serves on a number of boards including as an editorial board member of the African Journal of Crime and Justice and the Research and Publication Committee of the Black Lawyers Association in South Africa. In 2023, she received the award of researcher of the year at Rhodes University’s Faculty of Law. In recognition of the quality and impact of her research in South Africa, the National Research Foundation of South Africa rated her as a young emerging researcher in 2020 subsequent to which she received annual grants to support her research for a period of 5 years.
