Key details

Dr David I Armour-Chélu

Director of Recruitment and Admissions

Dr David Armour-Chélu joined the university in 1999 as a lecturer after working as a systems developer at GCHQ, Cheltenham, in the area of signal recognition and recognition in the HF domain.  His substantive role is currently principal lecturer.

Throughout his professional development, the area of finding information buried in complex signals/noise has been the primary interest of research and scholarly activity: from High Fidelity audio, through to finding statistical information of signals in the HF domain, to the application of charge sensors in pneumatic conveying pipelines.  Work and interests in these areas are available for under- and postgraduate student projects, an area of teaching support that he remains committed to, as well as MPhil/PhD projects within the Faculty.

Previous roles

  • 2010 - 2015 Head of Department, Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering
  • 2009 - 2010 Principal Lecturer, School Admissions Manager, Programme Leader MSc Computer Systems & Software Engineering, School of Engineering.
  • 2007 - 2009 Principal Lecturer, Associate Director of Recruitment, Programme Leader MSc Computer Systems & Software Engineering, School of Engineering.
  • 2006 - 2007 Principal Lecturer, Associate Director of Recruitment, Associate Head(Academic) for Computer & Communications Dept., and Programme Leader BEng and BSc Hons Computer Systems & Software Engineering, School of Engineering.
  • 2005 - 2006 Associate Head (Academic) for Computer & Communications Dept., and Programme Leader BEng and BSc Hons Computer Systems & Software Engineering, Medway School of Engineering.
  • 2002 - 2005 Senior Lecturer, Admissions Co-ordinator and Programme Leader BEng Computer Systems & Software Engineering, Medway School of Engineering.
  • 2001 - 2002 Senior Lecturer and Admissions Co-ordinator, Medway School of Engineering
  • 2000 -2001 Senior Lecturer, Medway School of Engineering

Responsibilities within the university

Dr David Armour-Chélu was appointed the Faculty Director of Recruitment and Admissions from August 2015 after holding the post of Head of Department (Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering) from January 2010 to July 2015. He was appointed to Principal Lecturer in 2006.

His role includes the strategic leadership of all areas relating to the recruitment and admissions of students to Faculty's wide-ranging portfolio in engineering and science.  As part of this role, he also represents the Faculty on university committees as required. As part of the university's outreach agenda, he leads on a structured programme of STEM activities for the faculty – from supporting the Education Liaison Unit and the Access and Partnerships Unit for Key Stage 3 to 5 schoolchildren, to various on-campus events for the promotion of science and technology education.

Recognition

  • Member of Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET)
  • 2002: Chartered Engineer (CEng), registered with the Engineering Council

Research / Scholarly interests

Dr David Armour-Chélu regularly contributes to research and consultancy work with the Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology in the Faculty. His main area on interest is finding information relating to the two-phase flow parameters monitored by electrostatic charge sensors in pneumatic conveying pipelines.

Key funded projects

Monitoring of Particle Velocity through Frequency Domain Analysis (RAE-ENG-001/10)

- with the Wolfson Centre for Bulks Solids Handling Technology

This funding allowed the development and full implementation of a number electrostatic charge sensors and amplifiers within the pipelines in the centre. The information contained in the output from these units helped support the analysis of the flow of materials whilst under pneumatic, conveying information that was found previously using pressure sensors.
