Windows 11 Rollout FAQ

Here we share answers to your frequently asked questions about the project. We will update this page so please check back regularly.

When will a Windows 11 image be ready for testing?

A Windows 11 image is currently being tested.

The pilot rollout of Windows 11 is in progress. This pilot program will last for one month and involves staff from the Faculty of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (FEHHS) and the Estates Directorate who have agreed to do testing.

Additionally, Faculty IT staff will gain early access to ensure a smooth transition and provide initial feedback.

How will I find out if/when I will be affected?

Please bookmark the project site and look out for articles published by Internal Communications.

Will I need a new/replacement laptop?

If you do not yet have an Intune laptop, please contact the IT Asset management team as soon as possible to obtain a replacement.  Due to security concerns, any remaining Windows 10 devices will be prevented from connecting to the university network after the cut-off date.

What happens to PCs that are replaced with docks?

In support of the university’s Sustainability Strategy and Policy which promote a 'zero waste' principle, we will redistribute all staff desktop PCs capable of running Windows 11 to areas where machines cannot be upgraded. We will recycle or safely dispose of all  equipment that cannot be upgraded.

Will the data on my PC be backed up?

Local drives will not be backed up or recovered. Where possible, data should be stored in the university's centrally administered Microsoft 365 environment. Storage on the local machine drive is not permitted. Please refer to the university's policy for secure data handling

When will classrooms be upgraded?

ILS-supported teaching spaces will be upgraded during university holidays.  Other areas will upgraded by arrangement with Faculties.

How can I get training on using Windows 11?

A range of help is available on Microsoft's Windows 11 training resources pages.

Is all the software that I use compatible?

We anticipate that a lot of the software in Software Center will be compatible with Windows 11, however all non-standard hardware and specialist software used within Faculties and Directorates will need to be checked. Some existing software licenses may need to be updated if they do not cover installation on Windows 11. Incompatible software will be package one by one when visiting each PC.

How do I request a software update?

AMP requests should be made by 13 June 2025 for the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Please ensure that you budget for changes and log requests for software for Windows 11.

In order to ensure that everything that you need is available for the start of the next academic year, please:

  • Check that any specialist software you currently use will work with Windows 11
  • Check whether new licenses will be needed for existing software
  • Ensure that any new software that you request is Windows 11 compatible
  • Complete an AMP form for each software application.
  • Submit your applications before 13 June 2025

Which teams are responsible for this work?
