Mimecast Large File Send

Mimecast Large File Send is a service to make it easy for our staff to send and receive files, including large files up to 2.0 GB.

There is a limit to the size of files that you can send over the university email system. Files larger than 150 MB cannot be sent as e-mail attachments, and recipients may have limits set on their accounts which prevent them from receiving such large file attachments.

Mimecast Large File Send (accessed via the Mimecast Personal Portal) allows you to send and receive files of up to 2GB. You can create an email using Mimecast and attach and send large files. This service is currently only available for Staff. Students should share large files via the Share facility in Teams or OneDrive.

How does it work?

  • Attachments added to an email in Mimecast are securely uploaded to the Mimecast cloud.
  • They are virus checked, and stored in an encrypted archive.
  • The recipient receives the email along with instructions on how to access the file.
  • The recipient is directed to a secure web portal where files can be downloaded by requesting and entering an optional access key (if required by the sender).
  • The sender can set expiration options and be notified when the file has been downloaded.
  • Files can be sent back via a secure portal.

How to use:

Sending Large Files

You can send a large file via the Mimecast Personal Portal.

  1. Go to the Mimecast site: https://login-uk.mimecast.com/.
    You will need to enter your full university email address (i.e. A.N.Other@greenwich .ac.uk) and click Next.

  2. Sign in to your Greenwich account when prompted (this time using your a short email, e.g. xx1234x@gre.ac.uk)

  3. On the Mimecast My Apps page, click on the 'Mimecast Personal Portal' tile.

  4. Follow the steps at Large File Send Attachments (mimecast.com) to send a large file.

Requesting attachments

You can request a large file to be sent to you via the Mimecast Personal Portal.

  1. Go to the Mimecast site: https://login-uk.mimecast.com/.
    You will need to enter your full university email address (i.e. A.N.Other@greenwich .ac.uk) and click Next.

  2. Sign in to your Greenwich account when prompted (this time using your a short email, e.g. xx1234x@gre.ac.uk)

  3. On the Mimecast My Apps page, click on the 'Mimecast Personal Portal' tile.

  4. Follow the steps at Requesting Attachments (mimecast.com) to request an attachment.
    Please note that we no longer use large file transfer via Mimecast for Outlook. You will need to scroll down to the section at "You can request a Large File to be sent to you via the Mimecast Personal Portal".
