QA010 & Online

The Institute of Political Economy, Governance, Finance and Accountability (PEGFA) invites you to its Research Seminar Series 2024/25.

This Research Seminar will take place on 28th November at 5pm in QA010 & Online and will feature PEGFA speaker Dr Trung Bao Hoang

Dr Hoang will be asking 'Do borrowers benefit from Green Loans?'

Please find the abstract below:

'In this study, we examine whether firms benefit from committing to green credit. We investigate 1,128 Green Loans tranches borrowed by 299 non-financial firms from 2016 to 2023. Our findings indicate the benefits to green borrowers. First, the borrowing firms' shares earn abnormal positive returns around their Green

Loan announcements. Second, we examined green-loan borrowers in panel data with fixed-effect and tested the robustness by staggered difference-in-difference, matching the sample with firms that only borrow conventional loans. The findings show that committing to the green credit improves firm's asset operating efficiency. We also explain that this improvement is as the lower operating expenses as firms start producing green revenue. Third, the carbon dioxide emission ratio to revenue is reduced after firms borrow green loans. Fourth, the size of the

Green loan correlates with the asset operating efficiency and carbon emitted from the production. The larger the amount of Green credit, the higher operating income/asset ratios and the lower kilograms of carbon dioxide released per ‘000 USD revenue.'
