The Institute of Political Economy, Governance, Finance and Accountability (PEGFA) invites you to its Research Seminar Series 2024/25. This Research Seminar will take place on 25th February 2025 in QA039 & Online, featuring PEGFA speakers Dr Shazerinna Shah and Jose Alejandro Coronado Arciniegas. Dr Shah will be presenting on ''CEO-Board Ethic Ties and Earnings Management'. 'While prior studies have long emphasised the effect of achieved or acquired social ties on governance outcomes, little attention has been given to the impact of ascribed social ties. This study, grounded in social identity theory, explores the influence of CEO-board ethnic ties on earnings management within the Malaysian context, characterised by three clearly defined ethnic groups.' Jose Alejandro Coronado Arciniegas will be discussing 'As You Like It: Digital Platforms, Attention Rents and Statistical Equilibrium'. 'I present a general framework to study the behavior of a firm operating a digital marketplace. I model a pure exchange economy in which agents engage in costly search and are matched using a maximum entropy distribution. A maximum entropy distribution of agents across goods sustains non-optimal price distributions, analogous to statistical equilibrium interpretations of classical price theory. An attention broker operating a digital marketplace is an agent capable of extracting economic rents by offering alternative allocations through the production of information. I study alternative equilibrium allocations and discuss the relation between information production and the equilibrium price distribution.' The MS Teams meeting can be accessed here. We look forward to seeing you there! The full schedule for the 2024/25 PEGFA Seminar Series can be found here.
