19th Mar 2025 1pm - 2pm

Campus

The Centre for Transformative and Global Justice, University of Greenwich, UK, in partnership with Centre for Field Learning, India and with support from Eko Consulting, India, welcomes you to the third of four seminars in a monthly series on Environment Preservation and Human Rights with a focus on India.

Abstract:

The lecture explores the critical role of pro bono legal work in bridging the gap between underserved communities and the justice system. Despite constitutional guarantees and legislative frameworks aimed at ensuring equal access to justice, a significant portion of India’s population remains unable to afford legal representation. This session examines the evolution, scope, and challenges of pro bono culture in India, highlighting its potential to address systemic inequities.

Key themes include an analysis of existing legal aid mechanisms, Government initiatives on furthering access to justice, the involvement of law firms, non-governmental organizations, Higher educational institutions, and individual practitioners in voluntary legal services, and the ethical obligations of legal professionals under the Advocates Act, 1961. By drawing on case studies and comparative insights from international models, the lecture underscores the importance of fostering a robust pro bono ecosystem in India. The discussion also emphasizes the need for institutional support, policy reforms, and innovative approaches to encourage greater participation in pro bono initiatives.
