The scholarship is a £18,500 cash bursary or fee waiver to study the Architecture Part 2 MArch course at the University of Greenwich commencing 2024/25.
The scholarship is available for Black students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and/or Black students who are estranged or Care-experienced.
The duration of the course is two years (full-time), and the scholarship is awarded in three instalments per year to assist applicants to pursue a career in architecture.
The scholarship is available for full and part-time study of this course. Please note that part-time students will be awarded pro rata.
Because of Stephen
The scholarship honours the life and legacy of Stephen Lawrence. Stephen grew up in South East London and wanted to become an architect. His mother, Doreen, now Baroness Lawrence was studying at University of Greenwich when Stephen was murdered in an unprovoked racist attack in Eltham. Stephen was only 18 years old, and it took twenty years before some of those responsible for Stephen’s murder were convicted.
Baroness Lawrence campaigned tirelessly for justice for Stephen, including a public inquiry into the handling of the case which has changed societal attitudes to racism, to the law and to police practice.
About the scholarship
University of Greenwich partners with the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation who exist to inspire a more equitable, inclusive society, and to foster opportunities for marginalised young people in the UK. One of the ways we are working together is through removing barriers to education and work, and we are starting with architecture.
According to the “Equality and Diversity survey” conducted by ARB (Equality & Diversity Data, 2020) 83% of UK architects are from white ethnic backgrounds and only 1% of respondents identified as Black. There are many reasons for this disparity, but a considerable barrier is the cost of training and qualifying.
One scholarship is currently available for 2024/5 entry, but the university is actively fundraising to offer more scholarships at the earliest opportunity. Please contact Mary Davies, Head of Alumni and Fundraising at m.b.davies@greenwich.ac.uk for more information.
