How law student Abu followed his dreams and impressed his family
I came to the UK with great ambitions, and the university has helped me achieve them.
Why did you choose the University of Greenwich?
I knew I wanted to come to London and the University of Greenwich looked the best choice. It had a beautiful site and the reviews from were great. I also knew someone back home who'd gone to Greenwich and got a really good job, and he'd recommended the university to me.
Who inspired you to study at university?
I was really influenced by my uncle. He taught me that the purpose of education was to achieve a better life. I'm one of the first people in my family to get into a prestigious university like this. It's an honour to be here to represent them.
How has the University of Greenwich pushed you?
The university has helped me compete against other good students by letting me know how competitive the jobs market is. Lecturers make it clear how hard we need to work to get into a good firm. Plus there are always deadlines and tests to keep us on our toes!
What have been the biggest obstacles in the way of you getting to university?
I needed guidance to make my application. I wasn't familiar with the UK's grading system, and my grades needed to be converted into UCAS scores.
I've made useful contacts through guest lecturers from Canary Wharf, one of the most important financial hubs in the world.
How has the University of Greenwich helped you achieve your goals?
I came to the UK with great ambitions, and the university has helped me achieve them. I've had excellent teachers. Our tutors are like your academic parents, looking after you, asking if you have any problems. I've made useful contacts through guest lecturers from Canary Wharf, one of the most important financial hubs in the world. We've visited Canary Wharf, as well as London's museums and the Bank of England. This has helped me broaden my outlook and learn the culture, and it's prepared me for working here.
What are your ambitions for the future?
I'm doing my law degree now, and I've been applying for training contracts. I want to do a legal practice course afterwards. If I don't follow law, I might study mathematics or philosophy and go into investment banking.
