Attending your in-person teaching sessions
We expect you to attend each week and the university will monitor this accordingly. Regular attendance at classes and active engagement with all course materials are widely recognised as crucial to reaching your full potential in your studies.
Good attendance is widely recognised as being essential for reaching your full potential in your studies. Actively participating in lectures, seminars and workshops, having regular meetings with your supervisory team, or practical training, offers valuable opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge needed to achieve your programme’s goals.
We expect you to attend your teaching events on a weekly basis as per our Attendance Monitoring Policy & Procedure
More information can be found below:
Recording your attendance
To record your attendance, scan the QR code in class using your mobile device, but you must use single sign-on and multi-factor authentication (MFA). To ensure your mobile device is set up ready to register your attendance using the QR code, please see guidance on how to do this.
Alternatively, you can tap in with your student ID card if there are card readers available in the classroom.
It is your responsibly to ensure your attendance at a session has been registered and that it is completed at the time the tutor, lecturer or academic takes the register. Please note that we will not retrospectively amend attendance data, and you shouldn’t ask your Retention and Success officer or the tutor who took the class to do this.
If you do not have any timetabled sessions, because you are finishing your project or dissertation, or you are studying a postgraduate research degree, then your attendance will be monitored using different tools and processes, which are described in more detail in our Attendance Monitoring Policy & Procedure.
The first two weeks of term
The first two weeks of your first term at Greenwich are a busy period as you settle into your studies. During this 2-week period, we will monitor attendance, but there will be some leniency applied. For example, if your record has not correctly reflected your use of the QR code at the start of term please do not be concerned.
However, please note, this period of leniency is only applied during the first two weeks of the term.
Arriving late to classes
We encourage you to register your attendance at all timetabled sessions. However, it is compulsory to record attendance at seminar events, so it is essential to arrive on time for the start of seminar sessions to register your attendance.
If you arrive late to a lecture and have missed the QR code being displayed, you will have missed the opportunity to have your attendance recorded. In this instance, please ensure that you have your attendance recorded at another session that week (rather than asking the lecturer to record it during the lecture or after it has finished).
Please arrive at your lectures and seminar classes on time to avoid unnecessary absences showing on your record. Attendance will not be amended retrospectively.
Academic and attendance integrity
Any student found to fraudulently submit their attendance through any means; or be found to have submitted attendance on behalf of another student could be considered as having committed an act of misconduct and be subject to the Student Disciplinary Procedures.
Examples of fraudulent submission may include, but are not limited to students:
- Signing a register on behalf of another student.
- Providing their student ID card to another student to submit their attendance.
- Using another student’s student ID card to submit their attendance.
- Distributing QR codes and/or one-time-only codes used by the University of Greenwich’s attendance monitoring system.
Your attendance record and retention team contact details
We will record and monitor your attendance weekly, and you can also access your attendance record via the Student Portal.
If you have questions about recording attendance or your attendance record after a session, contact the Student Retention and Success team who can assist:
- fes-attend@greenwich.ac.uk
- fehhs-attend@greenwich.ac.uk

- gbs-attend@greenwich.ac.uk
There will be posters in lecture venues with a reminder of who to contact with any questions you may have about registering your attendance.
Registering an absence
Whilst engagement is very important, we recognise that sometimes, due to unforeseen circumstances, you are unable to meet the minimum attendance requirements due to external factors.
- If you are unable to attend your timetabled sessions for a period up to 3 calendar days, you should submit a short-term absence request via the Student Portal under My Learning – Notify staff of non-attendance. Please only report these absences from the third week of term onwards.
- For absences of more than three calendar days, you will need to complete an Authorised Absence Form, which must be supported by appropriate evidence for your absence. The form must be sent to and authorized by your Retention team. Please report these absences from the first day of each term.
Attendance monitoring escalation process
We monitor your attendance to identify low engagement in your timetabled sessions and help you get back on track with your studies. Where circumstances are having a significant impact on your attendance, we will contact you to discuss support options.
However, where attendance does not improve and you do not register your attendance for at least one session per week, or alternative action is not taken to address the impact, action may be escalated as per the Attendance Monitoring Policy & Procedure, and your registration as a student and your sponsorship, if applicable, may become at risk.
This is further outlined in our Conditions of Sponsorship information.
Repeated patterns of non-attendance
If you show repeated patterns of unauthorised/missed contact where you receive multiple Stage 1 non-attendance emails, Stage 2 non-attendance emails or combinations of multiples of both action may be escalated as per the Attendance Monitoring Policy & Procedure .
Support
We hope escalation actions will not be necessary as there are many opportunities to engage in support, and the Student Retention and Success team will contact you to discuss any initial concerns and support options with you.
Please check your Greenwich student email account regularly.
