Prof Paul McCroneProfessor Paul McCrone is an economist by background and has specialised in health economics since 1990. He is a Professor of Healthcare Economics at the University of Greenwich and Centre Lead of the Centre for Mental Health at the ILD.

Contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals:

Paul's work supports  SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being.

Prof. McCrone’s interests focus on health economics in the UK and internationally. Examples of work he has conducted include:

  • The economic evaluation of health and social care services particularly relating to mental health
  • Investigating predictors of healthcare use
  • Estimating the overall costs of health problems
  • Developing simulation models to explore healthcare costs and cost-effectiveness

His research has involved assessing a wide range of healthcare applications, including:

  • A symptom management system for patients with cancers
  • End-of-life care
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy for irritable bowel syndrome
  • Interventions to help individuals with psychotic disorders
  • Modelling the economic impact of stigma and discrimination relating to mental health problems

Much of this work has led to improvements in service provision, use in policy documents, and ultimately the implementation of new interventions. For instance, his work has been used in policy documents by the RAND Corporation, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, The Department of Health, and the World Health Organisation.
