Men’s Health Week – preventing premature deaths and good mental health

It’s Men’s Health Week, and this year they are highlighting that Covid-19 is twice as fatal to men than women.

Men's Health Forum are asking people to Take Action on Covid-19 and prevent the virus doing more damage by:

  • taking action to avoid spreading the virus
  • taking action to get the best out of lockdown and the 'new normal'
  • taking action to beat underlying conditions.

Mens Health WeekEven outside of Covid-19, it's a frightening statistic that one in five men dies before the age of 65. Research suggests that there are many possible reasons for this, but among them are reluctance to visit a GP, non-disclosure of symptoms, and the prevalence of suicide in men.

Men's Health Forum has all the information you need to get involved with Men's Health Week, as well as a range of resources and information to help men look after themselves and also about the way Covid-19 is affecting men.

There are many other places to get support and info. Big White Wall is offers free and confidential mental health support for students. If you want support for you mental health, both students and staff can visit the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM). The website is useful for anyone, but is particularly geared towards supporting men, mainly leading a movement against suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. They offer a free and confidential helpline and webchat, as well as support for people affected by suicide.

Movember is an another organisation that campaigns to improve men's awareness of their own health and how to keep yourself healthy and look out for the earliest signs of common killers.
