Keeping your information safe while studying online

TLDRoffon

More and more scammers are taking advantage of the fears around Covid-19, so it's more important than ever to keep your information secure.

Information protection and management is of critical importance to everyone at the university. As we settle in to working as a virtual campus ILS have received a number of information security and data protection queries, and we have already noted an increase in spam and phishing emails related to Covid-19.

Here are some key points to consider especially during the disruptions arising from the current spread of Covid-19.

Keeping your device secure

  • Avoid shared or family logins for shared devices; create a separate login account for each person who uses the device.
  • Keep your devices up-to-date; all software, particularly antivirus software, should be updated as soon as new releases are available.
  • Keep your university email and login details for university systems access only. Don't use your university email address, user ID or password on social media, personal cloud services or online stores.
  • And remember; never share any of your passwords with others.

Texts, calls and emails

  • Stop and think. Scams and phishing messages rely on you clicking, replying or entering information without checking first. If you are unsure, don't do it.
  • Check twice, click once. If you have any doubts about a communication, check with the sender or IT Service Desk to confirm it is genuine before clicking on links or acting on requests.
  • Be suspicious of messages informing you of an issue with your device that needs fixing. IT Service Desk will not contact you to fix an issue unless you've logged a call and the university will not introduce a new IT solution or process unless it has first been communicated through official channels.
  • Be security conscious, even when you're not working. Hoaxers don't care how they get through to you. WhatsApp have released guidance on hoax messages.
