You can now report suspicious emails even more quickly with the new Microsoft Report Message add-in for Outlook. This tool will help us in our collective efforts to identify and mitigate phishing threats. You no longer need to manually forward the email to the IT Service Desk.
How to use the Report Message add-in
Students and staff will be able to use the Report Message add-in both in the desktop version and web version of Outlook.
Outlook for Desktop:
- Click on the email you want to report.
- Look for the Report Message icon (pictured here) in either the Classic Ribbon or the Simplified Ribbon. You can find it under the “Protection” section.
Click the icon and choose either Report Phishing or Report Junk.
Outlook on the web:
The add-in is available on the Outlook web app as well. Look for the Report Message option.
The Report Message add-in allows you to easily report suspicious messages to the IT Service Desk
By selecting a suspicious email and clicking the report message icon, you can report the email as phishing or junk and the email will be removed from your inbox. Our teams will monitor these reports and act as needed.
Please only use the Report Phishing option for potential phishing or malicious emails. For general junk or spam emails, please use the Report Junk option.
Block or unblock senders in Outlook
Outlook allows you to create Safe and Blocked Senders lists, so you can filter unwanted emails into your junk email folder, and make sure trusted contacts don’t end up in there too.
Together, we can create a safer digital environment for everyone at the university
Phishing emails continue to be one of the most common ways for attackers to gain access to an organisation’s systems and data. Many of our colleagues are great at spotting these emails and alerting the IT Service Desk for investigation. Thank you for helping us stay safe online.
By reporting suspicious emails, you can help us to investigate potentially malicious messages, enhance our email protection technologies, and contribute to improving our defences against these types of attacks.
