The Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Community of Practice is holding its first event of this academic year on 8 November 2023.

The hybrid session will be of interest to those who want to recognise, understand and integrate ESD into their teaching practice.

About the event

Karen Brickman, Associate Head of School (SS) in the School of Accounting, Finance and Economics (AFE), will discuss the practical steps that AFE have taken to embed ESD holistically into their School.  This approach encompasses the entire student journey from induction and extends beyond graduation to life post University.

Karen will be joined by Associate Professor Silvia Colaiacomo from Academic and Learning Enhancement who will introduce how sustainability fits into the university’s curriculum framework through practice-based learning and authentic assessment.

The university’s new Curriculum Framework (2020) identifies embedding sustainability into teaching and learning. Ensuring our students are life-ready not simply work-ready will help them be successful, not only as students but also as graduates.

What is the ESD Community of Practice?

UNESCO (2021) describes ESD as:

The process of equipping students with the knowledge and understanding, skills and attributes needed to work and live in a way that safeguards environmental, social and economic wellbeing, in the present and for future generations.

The ESD Community of Practice will help staff recognise how existing teaching practice may already be ESD. Through sharing ideas, good practice and pedagogies we can help to develop tools that can be used across the university for learning, teaching and assessment. Through meetings and discussion the Community of Practice will also create awareness of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) and how they can be used.

Dr Louise Hewitt, academic lead for the ESD Community of Practice, said:

This is a great opportunity for staff from across the university to come together and learn about education for sustainable development and the many forms it can take. A lot of us are already incorporating aspects of ESD into our teaching and learning practices and it would be great for people to recognise this and also learn from others who have implemented ESD into their teaching.

All staff across the university are welcome.

You can book your free tickets via Eventbrite (face to face and online).
