Equal Pay: The Yawning Gap and Covid Impact

TLDRoffon

Last year, UK equal pay day fell on 20 November, and the university’s Diversity Interest Group and Women’s Staff Network marked the day by investigating the impact of Covid on pay equality.

Equal Pay Day is the point in the calendar at which the average man has already earned the amount the average woman will earn for the whole year. It’s not the same as equal pay. It's a measure across all jobs in the UK, not of the difference in pay between men and women for doing the same job.

Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, the UK government suspended enforcement of the gender pay gap reporting deadlines for 2020. This reduced the burden on businesses but may make it harder to identify the impact of Covid on the gender pay gap as we wait to see the full impact of a second lockdown.

Despite this, reports and research indicate that the impact of Covid is not gender-equal. Our event, Gender Pay: The Yawning Gap and Covid explored gaps in gender and equal pay regulations, the impact of austerity and recession and the impact of Covid on women working in the hospitality industry. The presentations from all the recordings are available on our website, or you can view the videos below.
