The “Empowering Youth through Entrepreneurial Skills (EYES)” project, championed by the School of Design research project team at the University of Greenwich, won an award at the latest Interreg North West Europe (NWE) impact awards in France.

The EYES research project took home the 'most impressive project achievement' prize in the NWE Programme impact conference.

Design researcher and Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, Dr Anastasios Maragiannis also won an individual award for having the most popular tweet under the hashtags #NWEimpact and #DiversityInclusivitybyDesign.

EYES is an innovative digital project by the University of Greenwich School of Design Research team to produce an original method for coaching NEETs (young people between ages 15-34 who are not in employment, education or training). The research team behind the project was formed by Professor Stephen Kennedy - with Dr Anastasios Maragiannis, Dr Catherine Maffioletti, and Kam Rehal in charge of design.

Involving different community professionals, and young people from North West European cities, this collaborative project sought to develop engaging ways to reduce youth unemployment, increase skills and confidence.

Dr Maragiannis said: "We are very proud of our project receiving these awards, given what it means, and what it represents for the EYES initiative. Our mission for EYES co-design research is to resolve the long-term issues affecting those not in employment, education or training through an interdisciplinary entrepreneurial based project that can hopefully foster and encourage new ways to tackle these issues."

The #NWEImpact Award recognises the significant research and project development of this entrepreneurial collective.

The Interreg North-West Europe Programme fosters transnational cooperation to make North-Western Europe a key economic player and an attractive place to work and live, with high levels of innovation, sustainability and cohesion.

The university is one of the 11 EU Interreg project partners located in five North West EU countries including: Belgium, France, Germany, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Professor Stephen Kennedy led the successful application bid for the University of Greenwich. The project is funded to a total of € 4.28m.

The awards ceremony was held in Tourcoing, France, in December.
