Creating Accessible Content - Resources to help you

TLDRoffon

This Disability History Month we have brought together our training, guidance and support for staff so you can create truly inclusive and accessible content for all.

The Digital Accessibility Guidelines mean that the content we hold on webpages, in Moodle, Panopto and Teams, as well as information we distribute digitally must be fully accessible. However, creating accessible content isn’t just a legal requirement, it’s also the right thing to do.

The video below explains our legal responsibilities and highlights how they will benefit all our students, not only those with an identified disability.

Our systems have been updated to make creating accessible content easy

Over the last year we have updated our systems and purchased new services to support the creation of accessible and inclusive content.

Blackboard Ally will provide you with an accessibility score for each uploaded file in Moodle and step-by-step instructions to improve your content’s accessibility, making it easier for you to make your course content fully accessible as you update it. For students, Blackboard Ally automatically creates alternative versions of your files, which allows them to choose the type of file which best suits their needs.

We have activated automatic transcription of teaching sessions, and for Term 2 we are implementing a process for students to request improved captioning for a recording. Student staff have been recruited within faculties to review these requests and update transcripts as required. We aim to reduce the burden on academic staff while providing accurate transcripts and employability benefit to our students.

There are a range of features available to you in Microsoft 365, including accessibility tools which ensure all of us are supported and empowered, and our Creating Inclusive Content pages provide you with university specific support and guidance.
