What is an eVisa?
BRPs (Biometric Residence Permits) were only being issued with a validity date until 31 December 2024, even if your course and student visa continue after this date.
This is because the UKVI is replacing physical documents with an online record of your immigration status. This is known as an eVisa. An eVisa is an online record of your immigration status and the conditions of your student visa in the UK.
Do I need to take any actions after the expiry date of my BRP?
If you have a BRP that expires on 31 December 2024, then you must create a UKVI account as soon as possible, so that you can get an eVisa.
You should continue to carry your expired BRP with you when you travel outside the UK.
How do I get an eVisa and a UKVI account?
You will need to create a UKVI account to be able to access your eVisa – instructions on how to do this can be found here.
What will I need to create a UKVI account?
- access to a smartphone
- a mobile phone number
- an email address
- your BRP card or a valid passport with your BRP number or visa application number*
*Your visa application number is the global web form (GWF) or unique application number (UAN) from your visa application.
You must provide a phone number and email address that have regular access to. You will need them each time you use your eVisa to prove your immigration status online.
New Students
The UK Government now issues Student Visas, and most other visa types as a digital eVisa.
If you are from outside of the European Economic Area, then you can expect to receive a vignette sticker in your passport with a short period of Student Visa on it when your visa application is approved. At the same time, you will be invited to create a UKVI account and access your digital eVisa which will show the full duration of the Student Visa on it.
If you are an EEA national, then in most instances, you will be issued with a digital eVisa only (you do not get a vignette sticker in your passport). Make sure to follow the instructions carefully so that you can access your eVisa.
