University of Greenwich joins with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation

TLDRoffon

We are one of 26 named in Europe for showcasing circular economy and research globally adding valuable knowledge and research to the Foundation’s formal programmes

The university has been recognised and profiled as part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. The Foundation focuses on our excellence in the application of Circular Economy (CE) thinking and showcases some of the work the university has embarked on around CE. Based on the principles of designing out waste and pollution, CE keeps products and materials in use regenerating natural systems and creating society-wide benefits.

Our university is undertaking important research, teaching and operational work that contributes to the circular economy, a crucial element in delivering sustainability. Being included as a Profiled University by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation is recognition of the breadth and depth of our CE contributions.

We hope this encourages more staff to share their CE related work for inclusion to this site. We also hope it encourages external organisations, including universities, government agencies and businesses, to connect with us to create valuable future focused partnerships.”

Simon Goldsmith, Head of Sustainability

The Foundation highlights a number of initiatives and research across the University and the work of the Natural Resources Institute’s (NRI) Produce Quality Centre. It also recognises how circular economy thinking 'is applied across a breath of research work and increasingly in teaching across faculties and programmes across the University.'

How we are supporting Circular Economy

The University’s page on the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s website provides an overview of the CE related work we have so far identified at Greenwich. They have identified areas of expertise in FES, FLAS and the Business Faculty and we are looking to develop a CE Community of Practice to share and develop work in this exciting field.  Key areas of expertise include NRI’s Produce Quality Centre, and the Sustainable Trade and Responsibility Business Development Programme and the Algae Biotechnology Research and Carbon8 within FES. Join our CE community

The University will be running virtual meet-ups for staff interested in presenting their CE work and to develop collaborative relationships. This is open to staff from all faculties and directorates with the aim of creating inter-disciplinary research, commercial and teaching outcomes.

If you would be interested in joining future meet ups as a presenter or attendee please email Simon Goldsmith s.t.goldsmith@gre.ac.uk

The university is committed to contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through its teaching, research and operations. Our work on the CE supports SDGs: 4 (Quality Education), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities)  12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) .
