2023 Honorary Graduates

Every year, the university honours a number of outstanding individuals who have contributed to the work of the university or have earned distinction in their fields of expertise.

This year’s honorary graduates come from a wide range of disciplines and have contributed in a number of ways from leading charity work to producing industry leading TV shows, from film making to criminal justice reform. Grad2023

Tessy Ojo CBE

Tessy will become a Honorary Doctor of Business Administration for her decades long work to transform the lives of young people.

In the past 20 years, Tessy has had the honour of working with two key supporters of the charity, His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales and The Duke of Sussex.

Tessy’s achievements have inspired people around the world. She was the first British national to be honoured with the Martin Luther King Award, in recognition of her innovative approach to leadership and humanitarian work.

Rebecca Donnelly MBE

Rebecca becomes an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration for taking her passion for martial arts and boxing into the community to help turn around the lives of marginalised young people in South-East London.

Rebecca is a Thai boxing world champion and English national boxing champion.

In 2009, Rebecca set up Fight4Change, a Lambeth based charity that uses boxing and fitness to educate, inspire and empower disadvantaged young people – some of whom are ex-offenders or at risk of offending. This earned her an MBE for services to community and sport in 2015.

Michael Kelpie

Michael Kelpie is a multiple BAFTA award-winning TV producer. He’s achieved great success in his career, working with leading UK production companies and broadcasters such as the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV.

Michael is currently Creative Managing Director and Executive Producer of the production company Potato TV, which he founded in 2013, and is part of ITV Studios.

Michael receives the degree of Honorary Doctor of the Arts.

Mathurine Emmanuel:

Mathurine Emmanuel is a visionary filmmaker and author who has won wide acclaim in the UK, the United States and the Caribbean. Her films explore the lives of people in the Caribbean and showcase her ability to capture the essence of the human experience.

Mathurine receives the degree of Honorary Doctor of Arts.

Mathurine’s talent and dedication caught the attention of the Saint Lucian government. She was approached to collaborate with the Substance Abuse Secretariat on a groundbreaking film about HIV prevention. This was the first feature-length film created on the island and marked Mathurine’s entry into the world of filmmaking.

Dr Angela Herbert MBE

Dr Angela Herbert MBE is an educator who’s spent 37 years working in the criminal justice system. She has a long history of supporting inclusivity, especially for people of African heritage. In 2008, she was awarded an MBE in recognition of her services to the Prison Service and preventing crime in London.

Dr Angela Herbert MBE will receive the degree of Honorary Doctor of Laws for her dedicated work in the criminal justice system.

Angela also Chairs the London Borough of Brent Police Independent Advisory Group. She’s played a pivotal role in initiatives that aim to improve the relationship between the police and local communities.
