Tackling Racism: 11 Anti-racism charities in the UK

1) Runnymede

Runnymede is a registered charity and think tank that aims to "challenge race inequality in Britain through research, network building, leading debate and policy engagement".

The organisation, which is funded entirely by donations, states: "Our authoritative research-based interventions in social policy and practice, and our public engagement with decision makers, will assist policy-makers, practitioners, and citizens, to reduce the risk of our society being blighted by racism and discrimination to the detriment of us all."

2) Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust

The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust aims to be a fitting legacy to Stephen's memory and to make a real impact by:

  • Supporting young people to transform their lives by overcoming disadvantage and discrimination and moving into ambitious careers as professionals
  • Ensuring businesses can benefit from and are more inclusive of diverse talent throughout their management structures
  • Continuing to campaign for fairness and justice, ensuring the lessons learnt from Stephen's murder are acted upon

They run high impact programmes in the built environmentschools & further education, and the community and are dedicated to transforming the life chances of disadvantaged young people and improving the world in which they live to enable them to develop and nurture their talent.

3) Black Impact

Black Impact works alongside Fifty Black sabbatical Officers across thirty Student Unions in England and Wales including our officers at Greenwich Students Union. They are supported by various African and Caribbean Societies (ACS) in campuses across the country, and a range of National Black organisations. They have made Black Impact a national African and Caribbean student network that seeks to support the leadership development and career aspirations of Black students in England and Wales. Central to their key objectives is the desire to challenge structural racism, social and economic injustice and discrimination within higher education and wider society in general.

 4) Stop Hate UK

Originating in 1995 following the murder of Stephen Lawrence, Stop Hate UK is an organisation committed to supporting people affected by all forms of hate crime across the UK.

"Stop Hate UK works alongside local strategic partnerships to tackle hate crime and discrimination, encourage reporting and support the individuals and communities it affects," the charity says.

"Our helplines enable people to access independent support and information, 24 hours a day, every day of the year."

5)  Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights (CRER)

Based in Scotland, the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights (CRER) is an initiative that is dedicated to combatting racial discrimination and harassment across the country.

The charity states that its "key mission" is to "protect, enhance and promote the rights of black/minority ethnic communities across all areas of life in Scotland" and to "strengthen the social, economic and political capital of black/minority ethnic communities, especially those at greatest risk of disadvantage".

6) Discrimination Law Association (DLA)

The Discrimination Law Association (DLA) works to improve equality law by bringing together a range of individuals, including discrimination law practitioners, policy experts and academics.

It carries out its mission by partaking in activities such as submitting responses to government consultations and participating in conferences and seminars.

7)  Race Equality First

For more than 40 years, Race Equality First has worked to raise awareness of and fight discrimination and hate crime.

"We are experts in the field of race equality and advice the United Nations and the UK government," the charity states.

8) Employers Network for Equality and Inclusion (ENEI)

The Employers Network for Equality & Inclusion is the UK's leading employer network covering all aspects of equality and inclusion issues in the workplace.

9) Pearn Kandola

For over 35 years, Pearn Kandola is working on making the world fairer. They have a particular focus on the workplace and an aim to make it fair for everyone by promoting Diversity & Inclusion and eradicating prejudice and unfairness.

 10) Equality and Human Rights Commission

The Equality and Human Rights Commission is Great Britain's national equality body and has been awarded an 'A' status as a National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) by the United Nations.

11) Inquest

Inquest is a charity, supporting bereaved people with state related deaths in England and Wales. For example, the charity provided support for the Hillsborough and Grenfell Tower victims.
