Carbon8 Systems: Development and commercialisation of Accelerated Carbonation Technology (ACT) to produce carbon-negative aggregates for the construction industry

Professor Colin Hills and Dr Paula Carey - Centre for Contaminated Land Remediation - School of Engineering

As a result of introducing the diversion of solid waste from landfill into light-weight carbonated construction materials using mineralized CO2, Carbon8 Systems, a University of Greenwich spin-out company established by Colin Hills and Paula Carey in 2006, was able to amplify initial impacts. There are three plants in the UK that are operating under license, producing ca. 300 kt/pa of carbon-negative aggregates. The development of a containerised system, termed the CO2ntainer, enables the direct capture of CO2 onsite and has been successfully deployed to the Vicat Group cement plant in Montalieu, France. Because of these developments, construction companies now have access to proven technology at different scale to produce low-carbon products from solid and gaseous waste emissions.
