A university that comes well-recommended
It was a huge decision for business owner Queen to relocate to the UK to study her Master’s degree. She had not been to England before, but support from her family and her new university made the transition easier. Queen had offers from multiple universities across the UK, but it was the University of Greenwich – specifically the Medway Campus – that stood out to her. The university came well-recommended – she had heard of the excellent teaching and facilities at the university, as well as the welcoming historic campus.
Her instinct was proven correct. She was supported by her university from her very first day in Welcome Week, our induction for new students. A Faculty staff member helped Queen access information about local landlords to help her secure accommodation for herself and her children in the local area and provided valuable information about local services. Queen greatly appreciated the support, which helped her make this big step.
Be the best you can be at Greenwich
It has not been easy for Queen to balance her studies with looking after her children and working part-time, but she says she is determined to succeed in both her studies and her future career. She says the support of her two project supervisors at the university has been paramount and that their expertise is invaluable to her.
The project Queen is completing as part of her Master’s degree is called Human Gene Editing, and revolves around using software to analyse genes. The module she studied in bioinformatics has been influential for the project as it has allowed her to develop advanced knowledge in the field. She hopes to build a career and reputation around bioinformatics in the future, helping clients from multinational companies.
I want to be the best I can be in my field, and the University of Greenwich gives me all the opportunities I need.
Develop your interests and thrive
Queen’s interest in the way things work began when she repaired phones and computers for family members. She studied her degree in Biomedical Technology in Nigeria and undertook a placement repairing medical equipment. The MSc in Biotechnology was the perfect Master’s degree for her as it covers elements of the medical field, biology, computer engineering and more.
She has enjoyed the independent research she has completed on her Master’s degree under her supervisors, and has found the iconic Drill Hall Library of the Medway Campus a fantastic tool to assist her with her studies and research.
Queen is proud to have made the leap to study at Greenwich and knows this is the right decision for her and her family.
If you put your mind to it you can do anything – I want to be a role model for my children.
