Study a degree accredited by five institutions
I initially found out about the University of Greenwich through a family friend who was studying at the University. I discovered that the BEng Civil Engineering degree at the University of Greenwich is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), comprising of five Institutions. This was crucial for me when looking for this degree as it indicates educational quality and graduate success.
I was also drawn to the course content, particularly in areas such as Hydraulics and Water Engineering. These modules offered theoretical knowledge and concepts in fluid dynamics, closed conduit, and open channel flow, which I found fascinating. What further solidified my choice were the practical elements of the course including appealing field trips, and the fact the Greenwich Campus is situated in a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Gain a comprehensive foundation of knowledge
During the first year of the degree, several modules are shared between other Engineering programmes such as Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. This interdisciplinary approach provided me with a solid grounding in various engineering disciplines. The degree then offers a comprehensive foundation in structural analysis, concrete and steel structure design using Eurocode, statics and mechanics, and manual and computer-aided structural analysis. I have gained expertise in preparing structural models and performing computational analysis using advanced engineering software. I have also carried out computational analysis, made sustainability and carbon footprint considerations, and studied principles of fluid mechanics, hydraulics, design and performance analysis of geo-structures using design tools, as well as acquired practical knowledge of industry standards, technology, and proficiency with advanced software like ETABS, AutoCAD, SketchUp, HEC-RAS, PLAXIS 2D and Causeway Flow.
During my third year, I had the opportunity to take part in Constructionarium, which assists students in acquiring practical experience in working on construction projects. Our specific project involved designing the Brewery Wharf Footbridge, which entailed developing management plans, conducting risk assessments, performing field surveys, ensuring quality assurance, and more.
When I heard I had won this year’s Institute of Civil Engineering prize, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and accomplishment. It was incredibly rewarding and has motivated me to strive for even greater heights.
Look ahead to career possibilities
Having a degree in Civil Engineering can lead to variety of career paths in the construction industry. My aspiration is to have a career as a graduate Water Engineer – my specific interests lie in flooding and computational modelling, particularly in river modelling and the design of urban drainage systems using Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS). I aim to contribute as part of a Hydraulic Modelling team, utilising advanced techniques to address complex water-related challenges.
As a woman studying civil engineering, I can say that I genuinely enjoy the course. It gives me a unique opportunity to stand out and contribute to a field that is essential for society. I find it fulfilling to work on projects that have a tangible impact, like developing infrastructure and improving urban planning.
Overall, the combination of comprehensive foundation across engineering disciplines, the practical sessions and the engaging nature of the course made it the ideal choice for me to pursue my academic and career goals in this field. I have also been supported in my studies by receiving the Greenwich Bursary and the Medway Student Support Fund.
BEng Civil Engineering is accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Institute of Highway Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Permanent Way Institution on behalf of the Engineering Council.
For winning the Institution of Civil Engineers award, Nuha took home a Certificate of Merit and a cash prize on her graduation day.
