BEng Engineering Management student Solace Ikumapayi explains why she chose Greenwich for this unique degree and how it will support her to achieve her career goals.

Unique academic offerings in a vibrant location

As an international student, choosing the right university was a decision I approached with a lot of thought and research. My decision to choose the University of Greenwich over other universities in the UK was influenced by several key factors, the most significant being its unique academic offerings. It's currently one of only five universities in the UK that offers BEng Engineering Management. The programme is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of both the technical aspects of engineering and the strategic and organisational skills required in management roles.

This multidisciplinary approach was exactly what I was looking for, as it would prepare me not just as an engineer, but as a leader in the engineering field. Additionally, the University of Greenwich has a reputation for excellent teaching and student support, especially for international students.

The prospect of studying in an environment that is supportive and understanding of the unique challenges faced by international students was very important to me. Furthermore, the historic and picturesque campuses of the University, coupled with its proximity to Central London, offered an appealing blend of serene study environments and access to the vibrant cultural and professional opportunities of the city.

Get a taste of real-world scenarios

One of my primary goals is to become a chartered engineer. My engineering management degree from the University of Greenwich plays a crucial role in this journey, as the programme is accredited, which is essential for gaining chartered status. Looking further ahead, I dream of climbing the corporate ladder to eventually become a CEO. The diverse experiences and projects I've been part of during my time at the University of Greenwich have been instrumental in shaping my problem-solving and leadership abilities. They've given me a taste of what it takes to lead and succeed in complex, real-world scenarios.

New opportunities on an inspiring campus

My time at the University of Greenwich has been a whirlwind of opportunities and experiences that have significantly shaped my journey. It was at a careers fair that I discovered and signed up for a summer abroad programme, a decision that led to an incredible internship with a non-profit organisation. Meanwhile, on campus I've been actively involved in Engineering Society, where I currently hold the position of treasurer. This role has been a fantastic way to connect with like-minded peers, organise events, and contribute to the vibrant engineering community here.

I've also embraced the roles of Student Ambassador and Programme Representative. Each experience at Greenwich has been a stepping stone towards a promising future in engineering and leadership.

For me, the best part of studying on the Medway Campus has been the unique blend of historical ambiance and cutting-edge educational facilities. I will never forget my first campus tour, where I got to learn about the campus and its rich naval history. They're equipped with the latest technology, which has been crucial in providing a hands-on, practical approach to my learning.

The Medway Campus offers an inspiring backdrop that constantly reminds me of the blend of tradition and innovation. Walking through the campus, I feel a sense of connection to the past, while being fully engaged in modern, state-of-the-art learning.
