Consider alternative options with Clearing
I was an international student who had recently arrived in the UK and just completed my A levels in less than a year. I did not get the grades for entry into my original choice of university to study pharmacy. I received information about clearing through a family friend who worked at the University of Greenwich. I researched the university, and I was interested to explore their BSc Hons Pharmaceutical Science degree, so I contacted the university’s Clearing line and started the process. I was accepted – it was a relief after the uncertainty I faced.
The Clearing route offered me the opportunity to consider alternative options at a challenging time. I always remember the experience with gratitude to the university for giving me a chance that has enabled me to thrive in my career.
The foundation of the knowledge I gained in my degree was based on core modules in biology, chemistry, physiology and drug design and development, in combination with hands-on practical laboratory experience. I had the opportunity to participate in a one-year industrial placement after my second year in university, enabling me to apply the acquired knowledge in my studies as well as gain work experience as a laboratory technician.
Shape the future with a degree from Greenwich
There are many emerging roles I feel will shape the future of pharmaceutical science in terms of digital transformation, bioinformatics and artificial intelligence applied to the industry. To consider a career in pharmaceutical science, opportunities can be found in pharmaceutical companies, CROs, healthcare industries, the National Health Service (NHS), medical charities, professional bodies/associations, government agencies, regulatory authorities and funding organisations.
I graduated from Greenwich with a 2:1 in 2002. My first role as Clinical Project Assistant was an opportunity in a Contract Research Organisation specialising in clinical trials for early phases of the drug development process. My next career move was a data manager role within the NHS across two leading research and teaching hospitals in London. My experience of working in operational roles gave me the benefit of enhanced understanding of drug development. My responsibilities have provided me additional knowledge about legalisation, guidelines, and regulatory requirements, which have evolved over the years in the industry. I am currently working in the pharmaceutical and healthcare/life sciences field as an Independent Consultant, where I have focused on projects in areas including health services and World Health Organisation principles, sustainability in science industries, antibiotic alternatives, and Covid-19's impact on research.
Enhance your personal growth and development
I am inspired to share my experience on the possible opportunities available to aspiring scientists. To begin with, develop a mindset to succeed and plan from the onset what goals you want to achieve. Be prepared to identify your strengths and know when you need support and how to find solutions. Determine what your interests are and where you see yourself thriving. Stay current with industry trends, join professional bodies and network. I would also recommend aspiring scientists consider opportunities for placements and internships.
My career path has enhanced my personal growth and development such that I can use creativity and innovation to bring fresh ideas. I feel well-equipped to drive my career to the next level.
