A rapidly expanding sector

BSc Food Science and Nutrition is an exciting new undergraduate degree course at the University of Greenwich. It’s a course that has been specially designed to prepare students for a career in food research or within the rapidly expanding UK food sector. The course places emphasis on learning by doing, with students able to practice techniques and use technologies in the university’s laboratories, including the new multipurpose food laboratory the university that has been commissioned on the university’s Medway Campus.

The programme will be supported by the new cutting-edge Medway Food Innovation Centre and will be complemented by investments such as the latest technologies available for use in the new Food Lab, as well as by initiatives already taking place within the Natural Resources Institute, such as the Food Accelerator Project.

We have designed the programme in consultation with food companies, so that you will end up having the knowledge and skills that food businesses require.
Dr Richard Fuchs, Principal Scientist and Programme Lead

Dr Fuchs, Programme Lead for the course, stresses that it is a great time to be joining the food industry. There is a need for knowledgeable, technically trained staff who can use the technologies required to develop new food products and bring them to market.

Learn from leading teams

On the Medway Campus in Chatham Maritime, Kent, students will gain a solid grounding in all aspects of food production and food systems, as well as learn about the role of human nutrition in food production. Students will be able to choose from optional modules in the final year to broaden their understanding in the areas of food that most interest them.

With the support of the leading research-active teams in the Natural Resources Institute and School of Science, students will be in safe hands to develop the skills they need. The teams’ specialisms include infant and child nutrition, obesity, and probiotic and fatty acids. The Natural Resources Institute itself is a specialist research, development and education organisation focusing on food, agriculture, environment and sustainable livelihoods that has run for over 125 years.

Work with industry partners

Partnership with stakeholders will be a key component of the course. It is planned the new food laboratory will be available for use by the university’s partners, allowing students to work alongside key contacts in industry and learn about and contribute to real projects.

It is our vision to strength our civic and academic partnerships. This will enable our graduates to already have a relationship with stakeholders before they graduate.
Dr Nazanin Zand, Head of Food and Market Department

Aside from the three-year course, a four-year sandwich programme is also offered. Students on this course will spend a year working in industry and gaining valuable work experience, insight and connections.
