An edge over other job applicants
Wanting to improve his knowledge and management skills further and really stand out to employers, Sachin left his career as an Electrical Engineer in India and began to look at options for Master’s degree study. He was interested in studying with a placement year to follow in his brother’s footsteps. Sachin eventually came across the two-year Engineering Management with Industrial Practice, MSc programme at the University of Greenwich and knew it was the right choice for him.
Excellent work experience and employability
In partnership with TWIN Group and Step, the University of Greenwich offers a number of Master’s degrees in engineering and science disciplines with an integrated industrial practice year. Students spend a year studying their course before commencing their placement year. Through the programme, students have fantastic opportunities in front of them to work with a wide range of relevant organisations, allowing them to gain excellent work experience in industry. Students are supported in their journey by the university’s Employability and Careers Service and its external partners. The initiative has led to many success stories and has benefits for both students and employers.
One hundred per cent of students fully engaged with workshops provided by TWIN Group progressed into placement, while seventy-five per cent of employers currently engaged say they are considering more placements.
Ann Hawkings, Technical Manager for TWIN Group
Sachin secured his placement with supermarket company Sainsbury’s, and he says modules of his course such as Advanced Principles in Supply Chain Management and Advanced Principles in Lean Manufacturing strengthened his technical knowledge, which he was able to draw on during the interview for his placement. He adds that he was also able to prepare for the interview through mock interviews organised by TWIN Group.
Open the way to new possibilities
As a Warehouse Operative, Sachin was able to put knowledge he learned in his course to the test. He has also gone a step further and taken it upon himself to learn about other areas of the company, including transport, management and control room operations from his colleagues.
There are many options and opportunities here. I gathered a basic knowledge of each department to gain an extra edge for interviews.
Within a year, Sachin progressed onto Team Manager at the same company. His advice to future Industrial Practice students is to use the wealth of resources available to them through their studies with Greenwich, and, most importantly, not be afraid to ask for help.
