Great outlook for graduates

Stephen Bonsu graduated from his Engineering Management MSc at the University of Greenwich in 2014. He now works for one of the largest companies in the world as a Mechanical Core Technologies Engineer (Product Operations) in the USA.

In 2013, Stephen found himself wanting to take on direct responsibility and more accountability in his career, which is why he decided to pursue a master’s degree in Engineering Management. The University of Greenwich stood out to him from other UK universities for engineering because of the successes of its alumni. Stephen can now attest to the great outlook for graduates of the university, as he was able to secure several job interviews and offers after graduating from his course, both locally and internationally, resulting in the highly sought career he is proud to have now.

Well-structured programmes and multiculturality

Stephen recalls that his lecturers were knowledgeable and personable. He found that the MSc in Engineering Management was well-structured. He also benefited from the good blend of modules covering technical material as well as elements of economics and finance. Stephen also valued the multiculturality of the university.

The different ideas, approaches to solving issues and methods of collaboration during lectures have greatly impacted my personal life and how I interact with people from different walks of life daily.

As an international student, Stephen says he was able to adjust to life in the UK by attending university events, making new friends and joining student-organised activities. Based on his recommendation, his younger brother also went on to attend the university to pursue a master’s degree with the Business School.

Pursue your studies with a passion

Stephen explains that engineers change the world by making life better and easier. In his career in the tech industry, Stephen puts people first every day by ensuring the robust quality of products and services that will empower people through their daily lives, while keeping in mind environmentally conscious designs to promote sustainability. Stephen summarises that people who work in the tech industry are innovators whose ideas and knowledge are used to create new and exciting technologies to solve everyday problems.

His advice to the next generation of engineering managers, whether they are just starting out on their learning journeys as undergraduate students or are graduates ready to advance their skills through postgraduate studies or begin their careers, are the same as those that were passed down to him by a fellow graduate. Students should seek internship opportunities; consider undertaking a placement year or other work-study programme; grow and keep updated their skills and knowledge; stay focused and find a balance between study and personal life, which is critical for wellbeing.

Lastly, nothing in life is easy. The road to your dream career may take a while but continue to pursue it with a strong passion and as long as you put in the work, you’ll be just fine.
