A university that welcomes international students

When choosing a university, Anindita wanted to make sure that it would be a welcoming space that would allow her to thrive. The University of Greenwich came recommended to her through a family member who had attended and found it an excellent place to study. She researched its Computer Science degrees and found the BSc Computer Science degree met the criteria she was looking for in a degree programme, and also boasted some excellent graduate success stories. She was also drawn to the prospect of studying in London at the Greenwich Campus, home to the university’s School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences. London is consistently ranked as the best student city in the world. (QS Top Universities, Best Student Cities, 2022 and 2023).

One of the main reasons I chose the University of Greenwich was the abundance of opportunities available for computer science students. I also believe that being in the London area has had a lot to do with how inspired and energised I have felt during my journey.

Anindita would like to start her own software company, but she adds that there are numerous possibilities for computer science graduates, as individuals can not only work for big companies but also utilise their unique skills to promote themselves and pursue freelance work that can be done from anywhere in the world.

A degree in computer science provides a strong foundation of technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and analytical thinking. As a result, the subject can lead you to a variety of careers including software developer, data scientist, data analyst, artificial intelligence engineer, cybersecurity analyst, web developer, and many more.

The University of Greenwich itself offers variants of its computer science degrees that will allow students to graduate with specialisms including artificial intelligence, data science and cyber security.

A well-rounded university experience

Aside from her studies, Anindita applied and was accepted to the university’s Student Ambassador programme, where she earns money working in roles that support university events and processes. In addition to this, she has been working with the university’s Outreach and Educational Partnerships Team, attending schools and careers fairs and promoting the university. She has even been able to boost her digital skills through working as a Digital Champion with the university’s Stockwell Street Library, a role that has included supporting students with digital queries and managing the Library’s social media page.

These student jobs are developing my technical knowledge and strengthening my communication and teamwork skills. I am not only attaining these necessary skills but also getting the chance to network with people in my field.

Anindita concludes that her favourite part of studying at the University of Greenwich has been benefiting from the university’s helpful services, such as the Wellbeing Team, Employability Team and Academic Support Services Team, teams that she has been able to access for advice and support from her first day.

International students should have a look at the website to find out more about how to apply to Greenwich and about the help and support available to you during your application process and beyond.
