The new Critical Care Unit at our Avery Hill campus is a first of its kind modular simulation centre that includes a state-of-the-art emergency department, operating theatre, intensive care, immersive rooms and an ambulance bay. It compliments and extends our current healthcare simulation capabilities by incorporating more specialised simulated healthcare facilities, subsequently providing the full-spectrum of healthcare services for our students to experience.
"Our vision for simulation is to focus on the patient journey rather than siloed elements of care, which will enable our students to develop a range of skills and a bigger picture view that can be adapted and employed in a range of health care contexts." Sharon explained. "It also provides opportunities for interprofessional learning and sequential simulation, that is simulation that looks at sequences of care across a range of sectors and disciplines aiming to bridge our gaps in understanding and improve healthcare more generally, whether through education, research or knowledge exchange."
Sharon went on to say that as a Professor in Healthcare Simulation and Workforce Development, she feels that this is an exciting step in the right direction and what all healthcare courses in higher education institutions should be aspiring to. "Simulation is a great bridge from theory to practice and therefore these comprehensive facilities will better prepare our students for clinical realities, ultimately enhancing the healthcare workforce and improving patient safety." she revealed.
The new unit is due to be completed by late summer 2022, so watch this space for further news and updates!
