Why did you choose to study International Business?
I am currently studying BA (Hons) International Business, in my second year at the University of Greenwich. I chose this course because of my long-standing interest in the business world and a desire to understand how multinational corporations (MNCs) operate on a global scale. The course provides an in-depth understanding of the fundamentals of international business, equipping me with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Through engaging assessments and consulting projects, I am gaining valuable insights into the industry, preparing me for a successful career in the field.
What do you think makes Greenwich stand out?
The University of Greenwich stands out for its vibrant community, stunning campus, and exceptional support for students. As a Greenwich student, I have experienced first hand the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that fosters personal growth and academic success. The university's historic campus, with its breath taking architecture and beautiful surroundings, creates an inspiring environment conducive to learning and exploration. Additionally, the dedicated faculty and staff go above and beyond to provide students with the resources and guidance needed to thrive in their studies and future careers.
What are the three best things about your course?
The three best things about my course are:
- Industry-focused training: My course is designed to prepare students for successful careers in MNCs, providing us with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in the competitive business world.
- Practical consulting experience: Through the Global Integrative Project 2 module, I had the opportunity to work with a real client on a consulting project. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply my knowledge and gain valuable insights into the role of a management consultant, aligning perfectly with my career aspirations.
- Engaging simulation exercises: The Operating in Emerging Markets module featured a five-week simulation game where teams of students assumed different managerial roles within a company. This immersive experience taught us how to make strategic decisions, conduct research, and navigate the challenges of running a business while competing with other teams in the class.
What subject interested you most and why?
The subject that interested me the most was Operating in Emerging Markets. The simulation game we played over five weeks was an incredibly engaging and educational experience. Taking on different managerial roles within a company, my team and I had to make critical decisions, conduct research, and put our knowledge into practice. This hands-on approach not only deepened my understanding of running a business but also developed my skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and strategic thinking. Competing with other teams in the class added an exciting element to the learning process.
How has your course helped develop your passions?
My course has played a pivotal role in nurturing my passion for entrepreneurship and business innovation. Particularly, the Global Integrative Project 2 module provided me with invaluable experience working on a real consulting project, which closely aligns with my entrepreneurial aspirations. This opportunity not only enriched my knowledge and skills but also laid a solid foundation for my upcoming summer internship at PwC UK in management consulting. The comprehensive curriculum covers both the theory and practice of international business, delving into business management, organisational functions, and international strategies. Moreover, exploring topics such as emerging markets, economics, and corporate social responsibility has broadened my perspective on the socio-economic implications of international business. This degree not only equips students with critical insights into contemporary issues but also offers practical opportunities, such as the option to spend a summer abroad. In my first year, I secured a fully funded virtual internship from the university at Think Pacific, where I created business guides and resources to help local women to launch their businesses online. Additionally, this year I secured my place for summer school in France. With the support of this course, I am confident in my ability to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams and make a meaningful impact in the business world.
What's your favourite module and why?
My favourite module is Operating in Emerging Markets, specifically the five-week simulation game where we worked in teams of five, taking on different managerial roles within a company. Throughout the simulation, we made strategic decisions, conducted research, and gained practical knowledge about running a business. The progress we made and the competition with other teams in the class made it an engaging and rewarding learning experience. This module stood out for its ability to bridge theory and practice, providing us with a realistic understanding of the challenges and opportunities in emerging markets.
What are your plans for the future?
In the future, I plan to leverage the knowledge and skills gained from my course and the various extracurricular activities offered by the Business School, such as hackathons and start-up programs, to either help other businesses grow or build my own venture. The comprehensive education and practical experiences I have acquired at the University of Greenwich have equipped me with the tools necessary to make a meaningful impact in the business world, whether through consulting, entrepreneurship, or supporting the growth of existing organisations.
What advice would you give to people thinking about applying to Greenwich?
I believe Greenwich offers everything you could ever ask for, and in some way, by the time you find your place, you'll feel like you truly belong here. For those considering applying to the University of Greenwich, my advice would be twofold. First, take the time to explore the wide range of course choices available and select a program that aligns with your interests and career aspirations. Reading through the course curriculum on the website will give you a clear understanding of what each program offers and the potential outcomes. Second, once you are enrolled, actively seek out and engage with the numerous opportunities available on campus. As the saying goes, "opportunity is everywhere; you just need the intent to find it." The University of Greenwich has an incredible amount to offer, and by participating in various activities and events, you will shape your personal and professional growth in ways you never thought possible.
Top tip!
For those pursuing a business degree, I have an additional piece of advice. The Business School and the Generator (the university's hub for entrepreneurship and innovation) are two key locations where your input will yield tremendous benefits. During my time at Greenwich, I have actively engaged in various activities and events, taking part in start-up programs, hackathons, and enterprise events. Through these experiences, I have developed two start-ups, solved and won three consulting projects with real clients like AWS (Amazon Web Services), had the opportunity to run a Enactus Greenwich society focused on helping other students grow their businesses and run social enterprises, and networked with like-minded individuals. As someone said, "your network is your net worth," and all I got from here. I have also acquired essential skills in pitching, business development, consulting, problem-solving, sales, and much more. With one more year to go at Greenwich, I am excited to continue my personal and professional development, and I encourage you to explore my LinkedIn profile to see the impact of my journey so far. You will see that there is no limit to what you can achieve as a Greenwich student.
