Building a career in Events Management at Greenwich Business School - Toma’s Story

TLDRoffon

“Our workshops are designed to help us apply the theoretical knowledge we learn in practical ways, such as planning hypothetical events using specific theories. This makes the materials easier to understand and shows how it’s useful in real life"

For as long as Toma can remember, planning and managing events has been a passion. Starting at just 14 years old, she found herself organising events at school and working with non-governmental organisations in her home country. What began as an interest quickly turned into a skillset that she excelled at, leading her to pursue a career in Events Management. Her ambition and talent brought her to the University of Greenwich, where she is now in her first year studying BA (Hons) Events Management and Innovation.

Making the Move to Greenwich

Toma’s decision to study at the Greenwich Business School was rooted in her desire to build a career in Events Management on an international scale. Reflecting on her journey so far, she shares, “Since I was around 14 years old, I’ve been planning and managing events. I decided to move abroad and start my studies at the University of Greenwich to take my passion to the next level”.

Adjusting to university life can be challenging, but Toma found the transition surprisingly manageable. She credits the programme’s flexible schedule with helping her balance her studies and other commitments. “I only go to university two days per week, which gives me loads of time to study outside of university and work” she explains. This balance allows her to explore opportunities while maintaining focus on her education.

Gaining Practical Insights

As a first-year student, Toma acknowledges that she hasn’t had extensive opportunities to develop practical skills just yet. However, she’s optimistic about the road ahead. “It’s only been a couple of months since the course began, so there’s still plenty of time” she says. “Our workshops are designed to help us apply the theoretical knowledge we’re learning in practical ways, such as planning hypothetical events using specific theories. This approach makes the material easier to understand and shows how it’s useful in real life”.

Greenwich Business School's emphasis on academic theory, group work, and real-world examples has been a game-changer for Toma. She finds these elements crucial for understanding the events industry. “In our workshops, we analyse case studies and articles about globally recognised events” she shares. “This helps us see how things work in the industry and how to use theories to improve events. Group work is also essential because event planning is never a one-person job”.

Toma particularly appreciates how real-world examples bridge the gap between theory and practice. “They help us understand how to apply what we’ve learned in real-life scenarios” she adds. Together, these components are giving her the foundation she needs to succeed in the field.

Looking to the Future

Toma is confident that her degree will pave the way for a successful career in Events Management. “The university provides us with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills we need to become industry professionals” she says. “They also offer support in finding placements and internships, which helps us connect with employers and build our careers”.

Her ultimate goal is to become an expert in Events Management, and she has no doubt that her education will be the stepping stone she needs to achieve it.

Advice for Aspiring Students

When asked what advice she would give to someone considering Events Management, Toma’s response is both encouraging and heartfelt. “Listen to yourself” she says. “If you want to pursue this programme, don’t let anyone talk you out of it. And if you’re unsure, just try it! If it’s not the right fit, you can always change courses. There’s no shame in not knowing exactly what you want to do right after school.”

Toma’s words reflect the spirit of exploration and determination that have defined her journey so far. With her drive and the support from her tutors, she is well on her way to making her mark in the events industry.
