Bee Sustainable, in collaboration with the Alumni and Fundraising Team at the University of Greenwich, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to support its initiative towards a better tomorrow for bees and the local community.
About Bee Sustainable
Bee Sustainable is a student-led project by Enactus Greenwich that aims to preserve the declining wild bee and bumblebee populations in London. Wild bees and bumblebees are crucial to our communities since they pollinate the food we need to survive to the trees that provide habitats for wildlife. Bees are responsible for one third of the food we eat everyday – think cucumbers, apples, peppers, pears and many more.
Bee Sustainable is helping the declining populations by creating bee gardens where bees can prosper by finding shelter in flowers, plants and bee hotels. This increases the green space in the city that cleans the air, offers places for the community to come together, and homes for bees.
Bee Sustainable’s project leader and third-year student, Karolina Dzielak:
“We all hear about the declining populations of wild bees, but not many of us take action to help them. I wanted a project that can create a real impact in helping wild bees and bumblebees thrive and unite the communities in doing so.”
To fund their vision, they are raising money to create beeswax products such as candles made from sustainable materials with 100% of the profit being reinvested to create new bee gardens and involve local communities. They'll also use the funds to educate children about the importance of sustainability and how bees are vital to our survival.
The team recently pitched at the university's Enterprise Challenge 2023 and won in the Social Category, receiving prize money of £2,000.
About crowdfunding
Crowdfunding is a popular method of fundraising that offers donors an engaging and community-spirited experience. Crowdfunding at Greenwich relies on large groups of supporters coming together to support a wide range of projects to impact the lives of students, staff and the wider community. For students like Karolina and the 28 other volunteers, crowdfunding is also an excellent way for them to develop skills, from marketing to project management and professional networking.
It offers a new innovative way for students to finance projects that brings their university experience to life. Each individual gift, no matter how small, plays its role in helping them achieve their objectives.
