Passion for the Past...
Rebecca's journey into history was sparked by a fascination with the past, leading her to explore beyond the classroom. Her sixth form history teacher fuelled her passion, inspiring further education in the field. Reflecting on her experience, Rebecca notes, "I would always find myself wanting to learn more about what I learnt at school...", sharing how her curiosity drove her to engage with historical videos and delve into more intense aspects of history to deepen her understanding.
History in three words is vast, intense, and fascinating.
A great campus location for Historians...
As a history student, Rebecca is a huge fan of our Greenwich campus - a UNESCO World Heritage site surrounded by local museums and historical landmarks! "As a historian, I adore the campus; it is so beautiful, and I love how much history surrounds me! Every now and then, I take a look and remember how beautiful my campus is." Along with its historical charm, Rebecca also appreciates the campus’s convenient proximity to central London, offering plenty of opportunities to explore. She often enjoys walks along the campus and riverside between classes, with Greenwich Market being a particular favourite during her lunch breaks.
From learning to experience...
Rebecca reflects on the diverse opportunities she's experienced during her academic journey. "I've had many experiences available to me," she shares. "I’ve been contacted about possible internships and talks from a range of people.” and highlighting the value of university career fairs – all of which have acted as a great space for networking and exploring potential career paths.
Despite opting out of a placement year, Rebecca remains proactive in gaining practical work experience within her field. This includes activities such as visiting World Heritage Sites and The National Archives to develop her skills and gain invaluable 'real-world' exposure. Aside from learning, Rebecca has also actively participated in society events hosted by Greenwich's History Society and has recently collaborated with fellow students to establish a new 'Social History Society,' dedicated to organising trips for history enthusiasts.
So, what's next?
Rebecca's initial goal was to become a teacher, but the diverse range of opportunities presented by the university have broadened her horizons, inspiring her to continue her academic journey and pursuing a master's degree in history or English, whilst exploring the option to work part-time in a related field!
