You, and those around you, are regulated by a huge body of law and while the law can protect you, you are also expected to abide by it. However, law is not a national curriculum subject, so it is not surprising that there are many misconceptions surrounding the law. Nowhere is this more obvious than with criminal law where some areas, including sexual offences, are particularly misunderstood. Do you know what the law is and what your rights are?

To help young people, the University of Greenwich has been offering those in years* 11, 12 or 13 of school or college the chance to join a series of free, interactive, lectures which aim to educate and empower young people about areas of law relevant to them.

The series, comprising three sessions, focuses exclusively on criminal law:

  1. Sexual offending: this session, which ran on 8 December 2022, introduced the audience to the law on rape and sexual assault.
  2. Offensive weapons and assaults: delivered on 26 January 2023, this session covered the law on homicide, assaults, wounding, grievous bodily harm, offensive weapons, and stop and search.
  3. Hate Crime: taking place on 9 March 2023, this interactive lecture will cover Hate Crime Legislation and the law governing online abuse.

You will have the chance to discuss the lecture’s topic with the University law staff and students, who are delivering the session. If you are interested, you will also be able find out about studying at Greenwich, and about student life at the University.
