5 top tips for studying Architecture at university

TLDRoffon

Thinking about studying Architecture at the University of Greenwich?

Oladimeji, an MArch Architecture student, is here to share his top tips for succeeding in the world of architecture and making the most of your student experience.

1.  Be open to learning new skills

Architecture is not just about designing buildings; it’s about refining problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, collaboration and creativity. Oladimeji shares how the design process has sharpened his skills, explaining, “When you resolve enough floor plans, you begin to find opportunities where you otherwise won’t have seen before.” These problem-solving and design skills are transferable to many other fields – thanks to the universal principles of design.

2.  Build your strengths

"Don’t worry if you’re not the best drawer, technically gifted, or the most creative, architecture is about playing with your strengths,” says Oladimeji. Understanding your strengths will help you focus on areas where you can truly excel, creating designs that are unique to you and reflect your personal abilities. Embrace what makes you stand out and use it to your advantage!

3.  Manage your time wisely

Architecture can be a demanding course, so time management is key. Oladimeji advises students to “start work on time to avoid missing deadlines.” To manage your workload, it’s essential to keep yourself organised, balance your tasks and avoid procrastination.

4. Learn to embrace criticism

Architecture is a journey of growth, creativity and experimentation. While it’s normal to get attached to your work, embracing feedback and criticism at an earlier stage in the design process allows for more creativity and innovation. Oladimeji stresses the importance of “trying new materials, concepts and methods,” – so you have the freedom to let your imagination run wild!

5. Enjoy the journey!

Architecture school pushes you out of your comfort zone, but it's equally important to take breaks and maintain balance. Oladimeji shares the importance of “making friends, both within and outside your course” noting that connecting with people from different areas can provide a more enriching and refreshing student experience.

We hope this provides valuable insight into making the most of your Architecture journey at the University of Greenwich, equipping you with the skills to thrive both academically and professionally!
