Societies and Greenwich Students' Union

The Lower Deck in the Dreadnought Student Hub is the current home of the University of Greenwich Students' Union, and is the primary place for student social gatherings situated in Greenwich. A multitude of weekly events, society meetings and special events are hosted here, but it is also a place to go and eat, drink and relax after lectures or on days off. During Fresher's Week, Bar Latitude will be an excellent place to meet other new and existing students and get to know the people you'll be living and studying with.

With societies ranging from academic interests to musical performance, and a diverse set of sports clubs, you are bound to find something that piques your interest. If you're unsure about joining a society, the Fresher's Fair is the best place to explore your options, with most societies represented and available for a chat, you can even sign up for society membership then and there!

Public transport

An Oyster card is critical to transport in London, you can't get on a bus or tube without one*! If you don't have an Oyster card, you can get one at the Tourist Information Centre located next to the John Smith's Bookshop on campus, or from most stations. You can also link your Oyster to a 16-25 railcard to receive a discount on all journeys, should you have one.

Greenwich is served by three tube stations, across two lines. Cutty Sark and Greenwich operate on the Dockland Light Railway (DLR) line, whilst North Greenwich station operates on the Jubilee line. Watch out for Transport For London's (TFL) plans for a 24-hour service starting in September!

Greenwich, and London, in general is well linked by buses, with stops close to the Campus, and all of the local halls, as well as a fairly frequent night bus service. You can check TFL's website for bus timetables and routes. It's important to remember that buses no longer accept cash as payment, only an Oyster or travel card is valid.

Greenwich is also linked by train, with Greenwich station providing a service to central London stations and beyond.

*A travel card is a possible alternative but is usually more expensive.

What to expect

After unpacking your things, the best thing to do is to get to know the people who are living around you. A great way to meet people is simply to leave your door open (as long as you're there!) and say hi to everyone who comes passed! There are a huge number of activities to get stuck in to during Fresher's Week, which is a great time to meet new people and try new things.

The largest of our three campuses, Greenwich Campus sits on a World Heritage Site on the banks of the River Thames. It is centered on three baroque buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren for the Royal Navy at the end of the 17th century.

You can find out more about it in our campuses section.

Excellent transport links provide a 10 minute train journey to Central London.

  • DLR Cutty Sark (approx. 3 min walk)
  • Greenwich and Maze Hill (approx. 8 walk)
  • Greenwich Pier - Ferry service (3 min walk)
  • TFL buses frequently run close by.
  • Public 'Pay and display' car parks nearby.
  • Campus bus service between campuses.
