What is the role of the university in society?

In this lecture, Professor Claire Donovan will provide an overview of the field of research into Higher Education – which has a long tradition at the University of Greenwich – and how we might regard universities themselves as objects of study. She will ask, ‘What is the role of the university in society?’ and answer this question by considering various perspectives on the educational, research, and broader cultural functions of the university. The lecture will conclude by considering the idea of the future university, drawing on examples of practice from within the University of Greenwich.

Professor Claire Donovan was educated locally at Charlton Manor Primary School and Blackheath Bluecoats Secondary School. Her first degree was in Philosophy at the University of Southampton, and she gained a Master’s and DPhil in Social and Political Thought at the University of Sussex. She has held research and teaching positions at The Open University, Oxford University, The Australian National University, and Brunel University London. She joined the University of Greenwich in 2020 as Research Professor of Higher Education, and Deputy Head (Research and Enterprise) in the School of Education.

Professor Donovan has pioneered cross-disciplinary research on research evaluation and policy, including assessing the wider impacts of research on society, and the governance of the humanities, arts, and social sciences within science funding systems. She has published extensively and attracted in excess of £2 million in research grant income.

Professor Donovan has given policy advice to government research funding agencies in Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and the USA.

She has been an invited Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University, Oxford University, Harvard University, the London School of Economics, The Australian National University, the National University of Singapore, and the University of Sussex. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts in 2013, has been a Board Member of the Campaign for Social Science since 2015 and joined the Editorial Board of the journal Research Evaluation in 2021.
