Dr Phil Renshaw and Dr Jenny Robinson - No Leader leads alone: the role of Leaders-who-coach

Learn about Phil and Jenny:Dr Phil Renshaw and Dr Jenny Robinson

Jenny and Phil run Leadership On the Go Limited, a leadership development, mindfulness and coaching consultancy dedicated to learning on the go. They deliver workshops, facilitate leadership development and write together regularly.

What Phil says about Jenny: Jenny has heaps of commercial experience having built and run several successful companies. The commercial radio station she co-established as an 18 year old in New Zealand, continues to this day! She used to be a Partner in TowersPerrin, a global consulting firm: has worked all over the world; been kidnapped (yes, but it wasn’t that serious); driven through the Borneo jungle as her commute to work; and learnt to be effective in the normal corporate environments of Asia, Europe, America and Africa. Whilst she had a seemingly magical early career, a tragedy left Jenny poleaxed for almost a year. Rehabilitation came through the madness of alpaca farming and mindfulness! She now guides others through leadership development, coaching, and mentoring, alongside a constant drive to keep learning – especially about leadership. Jenny now works on leadership development and as a mindfulness coach to senior executives. Her clients include CEO’s and leaders of multinational companies. Clients include: Allergan, Aviva, BP, BT, CBS, Gilead, Google, HSBC, Rolls Royce, Shell, Solvay, Sony, United Health Group.

What Jenny says about Phil: He is definitely not a cliché, after 20 years as a classic finance guy (yes, his childhood ambition was to be a banker!) Phil suddenly realised that it wasn’t all about the money – it’s all about the people! Those ‘numbers’ only get you so far. When I heard this story and he talked about working together, I couldn’t wait. Phil was a successful international banker for nearly ten years and fortunate enough to live and work in London, New York and Sydney. Thereafter, he joined EDS (a global IT outsourcer) where he continued his finance career, leading the EMEA Treasury/Corporate Finance teams and then onto Finance Director positions in the UK. In the midst of all that success, his first epiphany was that he didn’t want to be an FD. And his second epiphany was that he did want to work with developing people. With such a strong commercial background this gave a fascinating and unusual perspective to helping others develop their leadership skills. It was a natural choice for Phil to become a coach, as well as writing about his experiences, and leading workshops was just the next natural step.

Together, we have extensive experience of being leaders and entrepreneurs, of coaching and supporting others and we hold the belief that we can all learn on the go, when information is bite-size and built into the everyday situations we face. We believe that leadership is not a role, but a personal choice and we teach managers and leaders from all levels of the organisation the skills of coaching to improve their leadership capabilities. And if you want to know more about our stories go to www.coachingonthego.co.uk.

About the lecture:

For far too long, teaching leadership skills has failed us because it is based on the premise of the hero leader: teaching individuals to be in front. However, leadership is a collaborative endeavour. The COVID pandemic has brought attention to this – no leader leads alone. WFH has removed the taken-for-granted inter-connections and relationality that enable success. We need to build skills to enable this collaboration. Teaching leadership skills has also failed because traditionally (and still in most business schools around the world) students are taught what leadership is (theories, models, principles), rather than how to do it (on the go, in the moment, collaboratively).

Leaders-who-Coach possess some of the collaborative leadership skills essential to break down silos, enable collaboration and improve hybrid working. We will explain the dimensions involved and how everyone, irrespective of seniority, can develop these skills to improve their leadership capabilities.
