This activity takes place online The end of the REF2021 cycle provides an opportunity to share and reflect on impact in the hope of developing more knowledgeable, proactive and collaborative strategies for the future of social research in our university. Two FLAS-based lecturers, Dr Elena Vacchelli (Centre of Applied Sociology Research) and Dr Giulia Zampini (Gender, Deviance and Society Research Group) are working together to bring impact experts into dialogue with University of Greenwich staff. Every month in term 2, we aim to hold a webinar and Q&A on the subject of impact. January 2022 seminar: Dr Mary Cowan leads the Research Programme on the Public Good of Statistics in the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR). OSR is the regulatory arm of the UK Statistics Authority, a non-ministerial government department. OSR has a statutory responsibility to regulate official statistics in the UK and has a vision that statistics will serve the public good. OSR’s Research Programme has the aim of developing the understanding of what statistics serving the public good means in practice. Prior to OSR, Mary worked in academia, carrying out research and lecturing in Psychology. Talk: Serving the public good and delivering impact through research OSR has a vision that statistics will serve the public good and has created a Research Programme with the aim of developing the understanding of what this means in practice. One approach we have taken to achieving this aim is to explore different perspectives on what the public good means and we have recently investigated how researchers understand this concept. We carried out a content analysis on applications to the National Statistician’s Data Ethics Advisory Committee (NSDEC) and the Research Accreditation Panel (RAP) to understand how researchers applying to these processes describe their work as serving the public good. Our findings demonstrated that most researchers prioritised serving the public good through policy. In this talk, I’ll discuss these findings and other ways to achieve impact and serve the public good. The joining link will be emailed to registered attendees ahead of the seminar.
